The complicated stuff (like stealing art) I couldn't do without the
ASCII-Editor at http://studenten.freepage.de/meph/ascii/ascii.htm.
You can overlay images for tracing, etc.

It has it's bugs.  For instance the only way to shut it down is to
shoot it down.  Other than that it tends to work without a hitch,
though.

I started out with Notepad, however, and still use it for the simple
stuff requiring only cut and paste, few modifications, and text inser-
tion.

For some stuff I switch to and fro.

My tips from my website..
which happens to have several tutorials on it...

My suggestions for budding ASCII artists are the following: 

                       look at as many ASCII pictures that you can 
                       identify how the characters are used in those pictures 
                       duplicate an "already-made" picture -  
                       copy it line by line or section by section 
                       modify an existing picture 
                       start small- perhaps doodle and see what it looks like, 

                       and go from there  
                       use a model or picture as a guideline 
                       read the tutorials and the FAQs 
                       post your pictures for critique 
                       (or send them to a friend for critique)
