An awful lot of it is straight lines which are very easy to do. Basically, I printed the original picture and worked from left to right, on the bottom section. The bottom section is mostly symmetrical so thinking and planning what one half would look like was all the hard work I did. Then I just copied the first half and reversed it. I did not use a program to do this, although I know someone has written one for this purpose. I went through typing in every character and checking back along the line to see what was at the other end. This got harder as I got further along the line, as the other end was over a screen away from the bit I was working on. Once I had done the bottom bit to my satisfaction, I worked on the tower. I did as a builder does and started at the bottom and worked up. Then I had to add the clouds and rainbow. These were tricky because insert does not work in the editors I was using (emacs and pico on unix) which meant that any typing in had to be followed by a lot of deleting which may have caused some mistakes to creep in. I did one side of the rainbow first as just very rough spaced out dots and then added more to darken it a bit more. I'm not completely happy with the curve at the top of the rainbow, which had to be done without looking at the bottom section. It took roughly 6-7 hours, maybe more. I worked in my lunchtimes at work. I may work on colorising it next, at which point it will cease to be ascii-art and will become some other form of art, maybe html-art.
