Jave: New Version released

Jave: New Version released

Hi,

I just want to let you know that I have released a new version of my
ascii editor Jave.
It can be downloaded as freeware from:
  http://www.jave.de

New Features include:
- edit multiple documents at the same time (switch with page up/down or
Ctrl-Tab)
- new professional ascii art line styles:

1) Veronica:
  | | | | / /
  | | | / / .' .'
  | | / | / / .'
  | | | / / .' .' .-'

This time it worked, but i did have to upgrade my Java.
BTW: i found a bug right away, when i try to move the tool options window, it
jumps around as if i am trying to kill it and disappears...

Also, i can't seem to find those new linestyles, where are they hidden?

What operating system and Java version do you use? I have made a
workaround for that and wonder why it does not work for you...

> Also, i can't seem to find those new linestyles, where are they hidden?

They are to be found in the tool options window that just left your
screen :-/ Just chose the line tool on the left toolbar.

BTW: My provider seems to have lots of trouble with their web servers at
the moment. My homepage should work fine again soon.

Hmmm .. this needs something.
MY style !

I'll go clean up my shapes and lines diagram to make it more apealing to the
public .. some very good stuff in it - I use it constantly.

Meanwhile .. You can only use theese in the line tool not with free draw or
arrow or shape.
And the shape tool needs improvement .. thoose circles are not really round.

Also .. consider putting dialog boxes under shapes as they are basicly
different styles of boxes.
Something like Arrows are basicly lines with an added arrow.
Why not instead have freehand , line and shape drawmodes and make the
arrow(heading of dialog box in case of shape drawing) an option to theese
modes (with choice of different types of modes).
This also makes the arrow available to freehand drawing (The direction the
line was going at the very end determines the direction of the arrow).

Fill mode desperatly needs options to fill with other characters than X .. the
best would be patterns like .. err .. that other big ascii editor .. which
name seems to escape me right now.
And shading would be nice too .. you choose a start "color" and an end "color"
and the direction to draw the shade in -- I'm thinking like Deluxe Paint use
to do it ( i believe you can still find version 2 for the PC somewhere ..
ofcourse if you have version 3 or 4 for amiga that's perfect.

It would also be a good thing if you could draw a line/shape/whatever and have
the text tool use the line/shape as a path for typing text.

An example from my shape and styles file :

[Sentence drawing] - ( Drawing with characters aligned so they actually spell
something! )

            ught i
          ca n
        m a
       ' ... t
      I . . i
             ! m
      ! ! e
       p !pool
        l
         e
          H

Other notes :

Move all tools that draw some to the left toolbar and the rest to the top
toolbar.
This IMO makes more sense when they are grouped after function.

Fx "textbox" i think should be moved next to "text"

Figlet , image 2 ascii and makro are already grouped and so they should be.
BTW I suggest renaming makro to clipart which is a more used and known term
and besides "makro" is german (and danish btw) spelling .. not english - thats
Macro .. But as I said - Clipart makes more sense to most people as most
people know what clipart is.

Figlet tool needs some form of overview to quickly see what fonts are the
best.
I suggest moving all dingbat fonts out of figlet and into clipart and group
the fonts after type.
They should probably be sorted after size mainly .. since most likely you know
what size letters you need for your image.
There is no need to view all the really huge ones when you need a max 4 line
font.
I suggest the following groups :

Small , medium , large/huge , 3D , Special (fx. decimal , hex , digital,
morse, katana .. etc)

Howabout a button that opens a scrollable textwindow with all the fonts in one
group spelling the words you choose.
An ability to bookmark your favourite fonts would be nice too.

Image to ascii.
I think better conversions could be achieved (with some images) if Jave had an
option to find edges (trace contours) in an image like many pixeldrawing
programs have.
When I convert an image I usually find edges or reduce the bitdepth (without
dithering) to simplify the image so a clean conversion becomes easier.

Also I would be nice to have some control over what character the converter
can use.
I usually prefer a very limited amount of characters for shading while the
typiccal converter uses the entire spectrum of character which can make a
converted image look messy.

I mainly use the round and more shape neutral characters for shading.
Characters like :

.:%oO8 seem the best , sS&@# also fair .. but LITVE .. etc are not good since
they aren't so round to the eye and are much more likely to be seen as detail
than shading.

The perfect converter should be able to distinquis (how do you spell that ?)
between what parts of an image was detail and lines and what parts were
shading.

It would also be nice if the converter could load bmp, jpg , gif and png -
Correctly !
( Jave refuses to load some bmp's while happily loads others .. this must be a
bug )
Also It would be nice if the load dialog could filter out all non-supported
filetypes (instead of just showing *.*).

And how about the "plasticbag technique" ? .. Showing an image in the
background of the editor (resizeable and moveable and more or less opague) to
serve as a guide for making the ascii-version by hand on top of the picture.

Alignment in the textbox dialog also does nothing since the box autosizes to
the text.
It would be better to have aligment as an option to the select tool so you
could select an area and f.x center the ascii inside the selection - Both
horizontally and vertically.

Now that we are at the selection tool .. congratulations on the mirror
function .. it's very good.

Interface-wise I would like to keyboard shurtcuts for most tools .. along with
keys that when held down temporarily change the tool or function to something
else

F.x if you were in text mode and typing away and then needed to move something
you could f.x hold down CTRL or whatever or (as long as it's a function key or
a combination of two function keys) and quickly select an area .. move it and
then release CTRL.

Preferably the keys should work as they normally do in drawing programs.
F.x "CTRL" & "+" or "CTRL" & "-" almost always zooms in and out in drawing
programs.
Or like SHIFT always forces a elipse to be perfectly round or a line to only
draw in major angles like : 0, 45 and 90 degrees .. (ofcourse with ascii I

I also think a "Snap to grid" option would be nice so you could sure all your
lines started from f.x the center of a "cell" or on a grid line

It's getting late and I need to sleep so I will have stop writing soon
althought I could probably think of more .. and I didn't even get to clean up
my shapes and lines and post them.

Just a few more quick suggestions while I can remember them.
A brainstorm.

* an option to smooth out freehand curves by having the program try to do them
as splines or bezier curves

* This heart (found in Makro's) was originally done by me and some other
artist ( a female ).
We discussed this a while back - I found out to my surprise that I was not the
first to create this heart.
Can someone remember who first created it ?

I have several other nice hearts too.

* Better cicles (will post some tomorrow)
* Better boxes .. especially the rounded ones and dialog boxed ( will also
post some tomorrow )

OK an example :

Hello Christian,

Thank you very much for your long list of suggestions, ideas and
comments. This will help me a lot to improve my little tool.

But I have one question to you: If I implement only 50% of your
suggestions, how much will you pay for that? ;-)
Ok, I will consider implemention some of your suggestions. I do this for
fun and if it stops making fun I will not continue doing it.

> And the shape tool needs improvement .. thoose circles are not really round.

You are right - but can you provide an algorithm that draws good circles
(in any size)?

> Something like Arrows are basicly lines with an added arrow.

Yep, I have not had any time thinking about arrows during the last few
weeks. I have improved the other tools so much - I will take care of the
arrows later.

> This also makes the arrow available to freehand drawing (The direction the
> line was going at the very end determines the direction of the arrow).

Already thought about that...

> Fill mode desperatly needs options to fill with other characters than X

You can chose any character (for left and right mouse button) at the
bottom toolbar.

Already thought about that and I will consider implementing it.

Great idea! It is:
 a) cool
 b) easy to implement
-> You will see it in one of the next releases of Jave.

You are right, I don't know why I did not yet change it...

Correct.

Ok, what about that: For each category write a text file containing the
names of the fonts for it (use all the names from the Jave FIGlet tool).
Send those files as e-mail and I will integrate/implement this feature.
You know: The only problem is _time_. I am sure it will take some
time...

> Howabout a button that opens a scrollable textwindow with all the fonts in one

I tried that feature some months ago: The text bacame far too long to be
displayable in a textbox. The program crashed or so...

I have played around with algorithms and found that it does not seem to
make sense to use edge detection filters. Adjusting the sharpness will
give you enough control about contours. But we should discuss that topic
after the image2ascii competition (see other thread in this newsgroup).

My algorithms do that automatically during conversion - why should it be
done with the raw image before??

Have a closer look on my tool: On the right side you can chose 3
different algorithms for conversion. Default is "4 pixels per
character". There it does not make sense to change the characters
manually. But you can chose the algorithm "1 pixel per character" and
then will see a set of grayscales:
MWNHKQDXS65YJtjci=+>!;:~'.
You can enter any characters you prefer :-)

> The perfect converter should be able to distinquis (how do you spell that ?)

Before writing the perfect converter we should find out more about such
kind of conversions - I expect the competition to be a good base for
discussions about better algorithms.

No, it is an undocumented feature: I added support for "some bmp-files"
- this is better than none ;-)
I will add other file formats as soon as I find image codecs that are
not restricted by software licences. GPL will not work - I do not want
to publish the source code for Jave.

> Also It would be nice if the load dialog could filter out all non-supported

Unfortunately that is a problem depending on Java :-( There is no
workaround. But you might want to have a look at File->Browse.

Great idea. I will think about it.

Try to enter more than one line of text. It will work fine then :-)

You see where there is a very big problem: There is no documentation
available :-( Who wants to write one?

Already considered that - problem is: time.

Feel free to post any idea you have. The most useful/cool ones often are
the ones easiest to implement.

You can already draw lines, right? First divide the circle into four
quadrants: left, right, top, bottom. Basic trigonometry should tell you
where each quadrant begins and ends, and also let you compute the height
of the arc for each character between the beginning and the end. Then
you just have to "connect the dots".

Actually, you _could_ do Bezier curves that way too..

But what if you add your own font? How could Jave "see" what kind of font that

You're already warned in the program that BMP-support is still experimental.

Add a "custom" category with all the fonts that don't belong to any of
the standard groups. No big deal.

May I suggest separating non-latin scripts into an "international"
category instead of putting them in "special". And dingbat fonts should
also be kept separate, but I think you already discussed this.

Here is a different version (not better just different)

And another different version

      `. .`
        ` ldb

And this .. only very slightly changed one

    .'`','`'.

I like mine better .. but that is a personal preference .. How wonderful it is

Does the options window still behave strange with version 0.8beta? I
have made some smaller changes, if this still does not work I have to
use another workaround for that OS - no big deal.

That works fine for raster graphics and I have tried to apply those
algorithms (bresenham etc.) to ascii. The algorithms work fine as long
as you take one character as one pixel (and ignore antialiasing):
      XXXXXXXXXXX XX
   XXX XXX XXXX
  X X XXXX
 X X XXX
  X X XXXX XXX
   XXX XXX XXXX XXXXXX
      XXXXXXXXXXX XX XXX
But it does not work any longer if you want to use it for lines:
      ,---------. .'
   ,-' '-. _.-'
  / \ _.-'
 ( ) .-'
  \ / _.-' .-'
   '-. ,-' _.-' _..--'
      '---------' .' .-'
The ellipse is ugly (but by far better than in previous versions of
Jave) and the lines do not look straight...
By lots of work and hundreds of lines of code I optimized the lines, so
the lines above became:
                     .-'
                 _.-'
              .-'
           .-'
        .-' _.-'
    _.-' _.-'
 .-' _.-'
For horizontal lines there are at least 4 levels of height you can use:
__ .. -- ''/""
For vertical lines it is not that easy, there is only one (it is
different in JFL style): | (that can be transformed to ,' as the angle
increases). So using my line algorithms for drawing ellipses will only
produce good results for the rather horizontal parts at the top and
bottom, but it will produce trash for rather vertical parts :-(

Anyway I will try your suggestion for large ellipses - it could work
there but I am pretty sure it will not work with smaller ones.

Anybody out there with other ideas or experiences about algorithms for
ellipses?

None yet but:

I know you said you didn't want to release the source code for Jave, but are you
able to release the source code for just the circle drawing object(s), so people
could try different algorithms for them but wouldn't affect the rest of the
program? I'd be happy to have a go at finding a new circle algorithm (although I
can't promise anything much) but it would take me a long time to write the rest
of the interface to enable me to do it. Just a thought - I perfectly understand
if you'd rather not.

Going back to your elipse/lemon:

      ,---------.
   ,-' '-.
  / \
 ( )
  \ /
   '-. ,-'
      '---------'
How do people think this should look? If we can't improve this much, odds are an
algorithm wouldn't do much better.
      ,---"""---.
   ,-' '-.
  / \
 : :
  \ /
   '-. ,-'
      '--.___.--'

Minor improvement imho, but still far from perfect

I just looked at one of the links you have on the Jave site: see

The circles they have near the bottom of the page work quite well because they
have thicker lines - possibly something you clould look at?

Yes, i'm sorry.

BTW: what i really miss is a button to hide/unhide the options window or perhaps
to reset the options window position.

Oh, i forgot to tell. When i tried it, i had closed everything that may have
interfered with the positioning of the window, just to be sure.

It isn't? Good, i was feeling a bit guilty about it because it caused you so
much work...

This sounds all very good. If any volunteer takes all the fonts and
divides them up to categories I am willing to integrate it into Jave.
BTW: One font can belong to several categories, that's no big deal.
To me it does not seem that there are a lot of new fonts released, so it
should not be a problem to put all uncategorized fonts into a category
"other/new" or so.

It is a lot of work to build a simple interface to Jave so other people
can integrate their own algorithms. I have thought about that idea
before but I will not provide such kind of 'plugin' interface in the
near future.
But for a circle drawing algorithm you do not need to have an interface
to Jave. You can write a simple programm without graphical user
interface: You get the dimension of the circle as parameter (for example
19,10) and you print out the result to the standard output, for example:
       _____
    .-' `-.
  .' `.
 / \
;                 ;
| |
;                 ;
 \ /
  `. .'
    `-._____.-'
That is no big deal. And if the algorithm seems to work it is no problem
for me to integrate it into Jave.

Anyway, I will try using the line algorithm to improve big circles...
But there are more improtant things to be done before.

It is a complete different style that does not seem to be of use for
Ascii Art. Anybody who uses lines like that? I don't like them and I
think Jave can exist without them :-)

??? I can still see only 4 characters? Well, for lines with low angles
of gradient I dublicate those characters:
___________..........----------'''''''''''

I still don't get the point? Do you want to use broken/dotted lines?

Ok, but the problem here is not to find algorithms for elipses in
general, but to find out how to use them when all you have is Ascii
characters. :-(

Wow, that's great - thanks :-) May I add it to Jave's clipart library?

I will add this to my list of things to be done: hide/unhide is a good
idea, but the window position will not be a problem any more in future
releases.

In fact I have two configurations for that dialog: One with an ordinary
frame (ugly an big but works everywhere) and one with this small frame
(nice but does not work for certain browsers - and obviously does not
work for every os). Jave switches between those configurations depending
on the system you have. I will first try to find another workaround and
if it does not work I will switch to the ordinary frame for win2k.
Stay tuned.

If there is an algorithm for a basic ellipse could this be later on be built in a way to let the
individual decide an experiment with height, width, an selection of characters from the ascii
table to suit his/hers preferences ?

Perhaps not in future releases, but in this one i still miss it :-))

I will, and you can send any testversion with an (attempted) Win2k fix to me. I
promise to be honest and thorough.

It's against the law to honk your horn "excessively". A grandmother was fined for honking her horn twice at her neighbor. (Fairview Park, Ohio city law)
