These cubes arent quite as impossible as they look. It is possible to
construct one, and paint/print the necessary bit of misleading pattern
onto the leg, so that when looked at from exactly the right angle, you
see the pic above, when it really is a solid 3d shape.

Put one in a box with a viewing pinhole and you get puzzled onlookers.
