Of course!  Trace over the background image!  I wish I had thought of
that when doing the cheshire cat a week ago.

Of course there are different methods when the result is supposed to
be really crude:  Just resize your image to the size you know your
characters to be in the end.  Then make pound signs (or whatever) out
of the pixels by hand.  Here's my silhouette for Lynx browsers:
