Sorry Gareth,

    I have to suffer through with the same problem. If you are posting
some askii pictures, then about all I can recommend is to put a period,
or some other (hopefully innocuous) character before the double slashes
in your picture. Like this:

    .//

    Then the file bug won't bite.

    As to viewing stuff... I don't know of anything that will help.
You could always copy the picture into notepad, and edit the file://bug
out, but that's about all I have come up with.

Sorry, but this is a feature of OE5 that you can't disable. It will also
remove any single-spaces at the start of lines.

All I can suggest is that you get a different newsreader. I find Free Agent
does the job nicely, and gives my some extra features above OE such as
multiple sigs, etc. http://www.forteinc.com/ - It's free.

Martin is right that the file:// feature cannot be disabled, but
MIcrosoft excluded the feature that removes a single space from
the start of the lines in OE5.
