Encouraging ascii art piracy

Recent postings from Colin, Phil and Ojoshiro have again showed that some
people in the ascii art community lack the notion of intellectual property. Of
course, I think that this notion should be cultivated, but perhaps I am wrong?

Perhaps it is better to encourage ascii art piracy, if people lack the notion
of intellectual property anyway? In that case, stripping off initials is
enough modification of the artwork to claim it as one's own, see example below.

Pete et al.,

although I'm quite new here, and I don't want to interfere
with other things... here are my two pence:

People like Ojoshiro have made some parodies with your Steins.
And quite a few of them were even funny... That's why they
are parodies. Parodies btw do not infringe copyrights
if I'm informed correctly.

Now please enjoy it while it lasts, and please go on posting
your own very humorous cartoons!

And to all of you: please, stop the flaming...
I happen to like this group without it ;)

Well, I won't use the 8-char creation of Kid Casso anymore.
It's all he ever created, no wonder he's so bitchy about it.

I never saw him do anything else but some frames and a couple
of 8- to 12-char 'steins' (probably claimed by him aswell,
though the Germans have been drinking from them for centuries)
and some 'witty' remarks.

Can anybody tell me who this Powell-guy is? I've never seen him
do ASC11-art before.

Back to business.

Philip Powell is in Coventry, UK. His self-portrait is in the Artist
Gallery.

Among other things, Philip is known for his pictures of knights on
horseback with long lances...sometimes used for toasting
marshmallows which appear to be moulded in the shape of a well-known
copyrighted Frog which can no longer be posted or reposted in a
public channel...so I cannot include the toasted marshmallow pics.

Before the copyright ban I recall that they earned a Stein Award.

Hmm...it may be that same "cut and copy" problem that seems to be
experienced by other users of HTML-oriented editors?

Sarah Day wrote recently:
>Of course there are people who accidentally get the initials left

However, in his latest 4 postings about credits, Pete seems to have
got completely confused about those pictures; who actually posted them;
and who originally made or diddled them.

I think he has exhausted himself by the stream of long Verbal
Diarrhoea Essays and Debates about Ascii and Codes and RFC
Documents.

Pete certainly does not exhibit the stamina or the
intellect of Archimedes Plutonium and his "Pu Whole Atom Theory of
The Universe", although he and Pete seem to have something in common.

Here is Archimedes Plutonium's 94th Electron of 231PU which I think
he claims contains The Universe as we know it:

Hmm, BBC uses MCMXCVIII.
Also MXMVIII has been proposed.
But than of course I'd rather use MVMIII.

On many US TV series they do use 1998.
Probably because the viewers wouldn't understand.
But then again, the viewers couldn't care less,
so it must be a legal thing.

Erhm, the rule for Roman numerals goes thusly: when putting a smaller
unit before a larger one, you are only allowed to use the next unit
down, and not one smaller than that.

                                               Roman value Arabic left

For example: 1999. - 1999

To start, we do the 1000: M 999

We're left with 999. Are we allowed to do
IM? No, because I isn't the next unit down
from M -- C is. So we add 900, CM. MCM 99

Ok, 99 to go. Are we allowed to do IC? No,
because I isn't the next unit down from C
-- X is. So we add 90, XC. MCMXC 9

Finally, 9 to go: add IX. MCMXCIX 0

Finished.

I'm sure Martin Atkins could come up with some super tool for converting
from Arabic to Roman and back again ... then again, it's probably built
in to emacs somewhere (everything usually is).

I think that says a lot about US TV viewers, myself.

Roman numerals? Hehehehe, there aren't that many romans around anymore =)

Heh.. I actually think that
(A) It's more a matter of caring than understanding
(B) With the exception of film copyright dates and figuring out which
Rocky movie you're watching, Roman numerals are a fairly useless art.

Sure, that rules out MXM.
But then again, what is 1 unit down, eg
450 = LD or CCCCL,
490 = XD or LDXXXX or CCCCXC ?

Because lawyers wouldn't understand.

Wrong newsgroup, right?
When in Rome, do as the Turkeys :-)

Both wrong. 450 = CDL, 490 = CDXC. Although the Romans themselves
weren't particularly consistent about abbreviating sequences of four
identical characters, so 490 could also be CCCCXC, CDLXXXX or even
CCCCLXXXX.

The easiest way to understand it is to realize that you can separate
any roman numeral into digits: 1998 = M DM LC VIII. Each digit has
the same form as the lowest, (1=I, 2=II, 3=III, 4=IV, 5=V, 6=VI,
7=VII, 8=VIII, 9=IX) only the letters used vary between the groups.
Of course there's no letter for 5000, so the largest number that
can be represented like this is 3999 = MMMDMLCIX. (How's that for a
year4k bug?)

Another way to do it is using a two-pass process, first creating an
expanded number by starting with M, putting as many (0-4) of them
as fit in the number, then moving to the next lower letter. The
second pass consists of replacing each AAAA with AB, where B=5*A,
and then each BAB with AC, where C=10*A.
