The face only works if your "4" is closed.  Closed 4s seem to be much
more common than open 4s.  I couldn't find an X font with an open 4.

Hmm.  Do you mean the position is too square, or the shape is too
square?  Maybe a bit of both.

Well, I think the last one is marginally better than the original, but
the legs still aren't quite right.
