How to insert pix into Talk Sessions

Last week I posted an article which included the following:

Several people were fascinated with the idea of inserting "Little ASCII
Characters" into Talk sessions but were unsure how this could be done.  There
are several always of doing this. Here are the instructions.

1. FAST & EASY

****   RE-ASSIGN KEYS VIA KEYBOARD MACRO FACILITY IN YOUR COMMUNICATION
PROGRAMME.

(a) TELIX:  You can reassign keys via the Alt-K facility.  This gives you a
list of all keys assigned by the Telix programme and a list of all keys YOU
have assigned. In Telix the keys F5 to F10 and all the Shift_Function keys
are free and available for re-assignment.  The manual explains how to write key
macros.

(b) PROCOMM:  Keyboard macros can be assigned to keys Alt0 -Alt9.

(c) OTHER COMMS PROGS:  Consult your manual to see if you can reassign keys to
macros.

2.  SLOW & FIDDLY BUT IT WORKS FOR BIG FILES

****  UPLOAD ASCII FILES FROM YOUR PC

Make a series of ASCII files and store them in your upload directory on
your PC.  Make sure your Comms Programme knows where to look for them and
what to do to upload a file. Then upload them as ASCII files (don't use
zmodem unless you have it set to upload ASCII as default - and that's a
nuisance) straight into the Talk session at the appropriate point.  You
can uplod anything you like this way - including written stuff you're
prepared on your favourite PC based Word Processor.  [I use it to upload my
HI and BYE pictures.]

Problem is that it's a bit tedious.  See below for a faster method.

4.  FAST BUT INVOLVES "WORK"

****  MAKE USE OF YOUR COMMS PROGRAMME SCRIPT

Some comms programmes (such as TELIX) have quite sophisticated scripts
which allow you to do just about anything.  You can assign one to a spare
key (see above) or simply run the programme from your Comms programme
prompt.  As they say:  RTFM .. read the fascinating manual.

5. SLOW BUT STARTLING AND USEFUL FOR THE UNEXPECTED NEED

****** GET INTO A SHELL

If your system uses YTALK you have access to a shell via the Escape
key.  You can then run or read any file or programme to which you
normally have access on the host machine.  It gets a little bit messy on
the screen (use the "| more" command to clean things up a bit) but is
extrememly useful for bringing up files or programmes on the spur of the
moment.  It's also useful for demonstrating things from your system.
