When you ask for for some kind of software in a non-os-specific context
(e.g. in this newsgroup) you must _always_ explain what type of
computer/os you intend to use it on or your question just won't make
sense. Since you didn't I will simply assume that you are a unix girl
like me and recommend an editor called "emacs".

Something went wrong with your picture. To find out why I suggest that
you read a document called "the ascii art FAQ", which can be found here:

http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/7373/faq.htm

Well, I strongly suggest you read it even if you don't want to find out
what's wrong with your picture.

It looks good in a proportional font... alas,
not everyone uses the same proportional font.
Because of this, ASCII art ought to be created
and viewed in a fixed-with font such as
courier, monaco (for macs), or fixedsys...

And isn't that cat Nika? Mike's ( una...@sfa.ope.ed.gov)

Emacs is not Unix-only.. I have NT emacs, which is for Win95 and WinNT...
...of course, figuring out how to use it is a comparable task to learning,
oh, how to talk to your computer in 1's and 0's.

There's a program called UltraEdit (for Windows) that you can use for just
about anything--ASCII art, programming, web pages--you can get about a
month-and-a-half trial of it from http://www.ultraedit.com/ It's somewhere
between 25 and 40 dollars to register (can't remember now), but if you like
it as much as I did, it's worth it. :)

Since you don`t mention what OS you are using I peeked into your header and
saw that you are using MSOutlook Express - so I`ll hazard a guess at Win95?
:)

Try these:

Click start, point to Programs, Accessories, then click Notepad

or

Click start, click Run, type Edit in the Run Box and press ok, then press
Alt+Enter if it doesn`t run in a window otherwise the slashes won`t line up
right.

Also it is possible to get

MicroEMACS (Similar to EMACS in Unix)
NotePad+

and many more....

Seeya soon,

Don't listen to this nonsense! All you need to know is how to read the
mind of the programmer who made emacs. Once you've got that bit it's
easy! ;)

Well... that really depends on what you're trying to do with it. If the
answer to that is editing Ascii Art then the answer's prolly nothing. It's
good if you're programming 'cos IIRC it does colours for loops and what
have you, and it's pretty good for HTML editing for much the same reason.

There aren't really any cons (except that it's shareware not freeware and
hence you've got to pay for it) - notepad and edit are very basic editors
and UltraEdit just does a bit more. I suppose you could call the fact that
it's a bigger program and may take longer to load/use more resources a con,
but that's stretching the point somewhat unless you're on an 8086 or
something else steam powered :>

Ultimately it's just got a bit more stonk than a standard text editor and
if you're writing anything in code it's a lot easier to use UltraEdit than
Notepad. Personally, I *still* prefer Emacs for Windows with the colour
patch though :)

Hope that helped
