I have no idea why this is posting multipule times.
There is only one entery in crontab.
There is /no/ redundancy in the farts.sh.
At first I thought that maybe farts.sh was running from crontab at
0:10 and then ntp would run and reset the time to before 0:10 and
farts.sh would run again. But ntp runs at 0:02 before farts.sh could
run. So nothing makes sense.
My log says first one runs at 16 seconds after and the second and
third both run at 26 seconds after.
None of the other cron jobs are running more than once.
Anyone got any ideas?

Hmmm. It's not strange that there's an offset between your clock and the posting machine (at my ISP? or at the host that propagates to my ISP? I don't know enough about NNTP to know. Or care.), but it is odd that the offset changes a lot between postings (10 seconds difference according to your logs, but only 4 seconds difference by the time it's propagated). There's a command for writing to log files from scripts, but it escapes my memory at the moment. And I don't have a unix box up on the network at the moment to ask it. -- Aidan Karley, Geologist, "You are in a maze of twisty little presentation styles, all [different | alike]."

I have worked with ntp and cron for years and am very carefull to avoid time resets that will cause an app to run a second time becaues the system clock is runing fast/slow. So I don't think ntp has anything to do with this. I am going to disable it tonight and see if I get the same results. Also going to run a few non-posting runs of farts.sh to see if I can duplicate the error. You really run ntp every hour? Wow you are a man of [ludicrously unecessary] great precision... :) BoD

Are you running ntpdate by cron?
If yes: why aren't you running ntpd?
If no: disregards this post ;)

And have you set up one of the clock-training programs? AIUI, the timestamps on usenet messages have a precision of 1 second. So for news, there is little need to keep your clocks better synchronised to better than a half second. -- Aidan Karley, Geologist, "You are in a maze of twisty little presentation styles, all [different | alike]."
You should run it every second. You know just to be sure. BoD
