Hi...I am Including the text of a post from Colin Douthwaite from
25 Mar 97 regarding control codes (color codes). It is a fairly
easy task to use the art posted here and add the colors to the text
file. To get some great art, visit the homepages of the folks that
post here. The URL's are usually with their signatures. Please
remember that if you use their art to leave their initials or names

Control Codes:

PLEASE do *NOT* post Colour, Color, Control Codes or Animation Codes
to ASCII-ART newsgroups - or indeed ANY Internet newsgroup.
It can cause an awful lot of trouble on Net systems worldwide.
If you wish to post Raw Code then UUENCODE it first !
Colour & Color Control Codes in subject titles and headers should be
avoided entirely.

The problems are due to some Net software recognising the
Raw Code as commands which make the software do unwanted
things and can even cause a system to crash.
This message is being reposted frequently because many newcomers

Nice! But I think this might still confuse a lot of people. I'll have a go at trying to explain how it works... What Dave has done here is to write an html document (html is the stuff that homepages are made of) showing his sig in different colours. To be able to see the colours you have to copy it to a file with the "last name" html or htm (for example "dave.htm"; it is the part from <html> to </html> that you want to copy). When you open that file in your browser (Netscape, Mosaic, Microsoft Explorer, HotJava etc) it will look good and have the colours that are specified in the colour codes. To make your own coloured ascii art in html you should start with the codes: <html><body bgcolor=000000 text=CCCCFF><pre><b> (where the 000000 and CCCCFF are colour codes and can be changed into anything that you want) and end with: </b></pre></body></html> ...... (Please note that I have changed '<' into '<' and '>' into '>' in a couple of places. This is sometimes necessary, the reason is that the computer would otherwise interpret the things written between < and > as html code.) Is this about posting HTML to Usenet? So people who use real news- reading software and standards-based browsers won't be able to read your posts? If HTML "worked" on Usenet, you could never be sure that what you saw was what was entered, you could never be sure that what you entered would appear as intended, and novices wanting to *discuss* HTML -- which is the kind of thing Usenet is *for* -- would be out of luck.
