Writing ANSI ESC code 27 to text file?

I want to store my MUD welcome page in a text file, but when I try to embed 
the ANSI color codes into the text file, NOTEPAD keeps saying that now it's 
a Unicode file and won't save it as ANSI without stripping the very 
character I need.

I am using the keys (Alt-keypad-27) to insert the ESC character manually in 
notepad, but notepad ends up saving that character as "8592" which is the 
Unicode left arrow character.

Theoretically, I am not in Unicode realm by saving this character in the 
file, but notepad seems to think so. Anyone know how to correctly write this 
required character to the text file, without code to do it?

Notepad is a very bad program to enter escape sequences into, so I 
suggest using DOS edit instead (it's still in Windows XP), open up a 
command prompt window and run edit, or create a new shortcut on the 
desktop using edit.com as the location. (I also recomend putting edit in 
the send-to menu as well)

As for getting 027-escape in edit, press ctrl+p then press the escape 
key. You can also get ASCII 0-31 by pressing similar ctrl+p and 
alt+keypad sequences (or ctrl 2(0),A-Z(1-26),\(28),](29),6(30),-(31))

I found a program called PabloDraw:

It is a sweet program that does block editing, coloring, etc. If you save 
the output as an ANS file, it solved my problem.


Plus, it seems to be a much easier way to do what I wanted anyways.
