Mh, sometimes I wish people would be more
specific. What kind of spinx? Well, I try a
few ...

The original one :

               .---.
              //- -\\
             / j \
             `. = .'
              (' `)
              | | a:f
             / .===. \
            / | | \
           /.. | |.. \
          (| | ) ( | |)
           ` ` ` ' ' '

Some fancy lion with breasts and wings (and I guess
it should have a woman's head too) :

                  , ,
             .aa /(/(
            /*%%( /,)   _.
            ^'\%x(//)_.(
            _((. .\
           //_ _)----/_ )    a:f

:)) Well...

And in my sig some smaller originals ...

Hope you like one. It's harder than I thought!
:)

Those are excellent, Andreas. I'd like to give it a shot too. I also
have opted for the original sphinx.

                             /\.
        /\. _-_ /:_\/.
ejm98 /:_\/ /'. .'\ /__:_\/ .
            /(|`/ !)\ /__:___\/./
           | \ = / | /_:___:__\/
            ` --- .
           /---------\
          /-----------\
     ____/---- -/ \__
    / / / / | | \ \ \ \

               _-_
             /'. .'\ /\.
        /\. /(|`/ !)\ /:_\/.
ejm98 /:_\| \ = / |__:_\/ .
            ` --- .__:___\/./
           /---------\___:__\/
          /-----------\
     ____/---- -/ \__
    / / / / | | \ \ \ \

a try at a little more perpective:

                              /\.
        /\. _-_ /:_\/.
ejm98 /:_\/ /'. .'\ ___ /__:_\/ .
            /(|`/ !)\ /:__/__:___\/./
           | \ = / |/ / /\:___:__\/
            ` --- ./ / / /\
           /--- -----\/ / / /
          /--- ----- `/ / /
        _/--- __ _/ ' `/ /
      / /XXX/ ! `/
     |_|_|_|XXX|_|_|_'|_/

and as usual, I've gotten carried away and have added a caravan:

                              /\.
        /\. _-_ /:_\/.
ejm98 /:_\/ /'. .'\ ___ /__:_\/ .
            /(|`/ !)\ /:__/__:___\/./
           | \ = / |/ / /\:___:__\/
            ` --- ./ / / /\
           /--- -----\/ / / /
          /--- ----- `/ / /
        _/--- __ _/ ' `/ /
 ~) / /XXX/ ! `/
 .(_/^\|_|_|XXX|_|_|_'|_/
  ./|~|\ ~)
  /'/'/'|'.(_/^\ ~) ~) ~)
           ./|~|\ ~) .'(_/^\'..'(_/^\'..'(_/^\. ~)
           /'/'/'|''(_/^\' /|~|\ /|~|\ /|~|\''(_/^\
                     /|~|\ / / / | / / / | / / / | /|~|\
                    / / / | / / / |

_Verra_ nice, Llizard! One question, though: Are those Super Camels, or
do they just grow more in ASCIILand?

Do you realize that this was almost a BIG picture? ;)
Almost 20 lines!! Be careful, or those HUGE pictures will jump
into your editor at last. Frightening thought, isn't it. :)

I guess nobody would've noticed any caravan with the right
proportions. Those _tiny_ camels are not very impressive :

Cute but not impressive. ;)

You (Llizard, that is) should get all of this series and animate them...

Or, how about if I move the original ones further into the foreground
and have them walking on a ridge and others down closer to the sphinx...

                              /\.
        /\. _-_ /:_\/.

      / /XXX/ ! `/
     |_|_|_|XXX|_|_|_'|_/
                 ,,,
                     ,,, ,
------_
 ~) -------------------_ , ,,,,
 .(_/^\ ---------_
  ./|~|\ ~) ~)------------_
  /'/'/'|'.(_/^\ ~) .'(_/^\. ~) ----------_
           ./|~|\ ~) .'(_/^\' /|~|\'''(_/^\. ~)
           /'/'/'|''(_/^\' /|~|\ / / / | /|~|\''(_/^\
                     /|~|\ / / / | / / / | /|~|\
                    / / / | / / / |

And because one would still have to try to explain what all those commas
were, here it is without the ones close to the sphinx.

I must admit, I prefer the smaller ones too. But I do rather like this
new caravan:
                                                                   ,,_

ejm98                            |'    /  '    \|    \||
                                               '\ |'

and the end of the other camel caravan I just did:

Not only does it resemble a camel, but when I paged down to reply and
could only see its legs, it make me think of rock climbers:

legs of Andreas' camel:

                   () 0 | o
                    \ /\ o /

                 ,-/ ` ,-/

Here's what I saw:
                            /
                          ,'
                         ! `.
                   () ' \__
                    \ / ! c/ /

                                   / /

I was not able to stop trying camels but I couldn't make
a nice small one, so furiously I decided to do a big
furry two humper:

                       ,.
           . :%%%. .%%%.

    '__.. ,'% .-%: %-' %
     ~~""%:. ` % ' . `.
         %% % ` %% .%: . \.
          %%:. `-' ` .%% . %: :\
          %(%,%..." `%, %%' %% ) )

            %(%' % /-. \ ' \ |-. '.
            `' |% `() \| `()
                  ||    /          ()   /
                  () 0 | o
                   \ /\ o /
                   o ` /-|

the net so I don't know if I remember them right. I _hope_
this resembles a camel some way...

:) Not really. The proportions are a bit different (stronger

Yep. Found that page too. Nice one, though they've got

This camel, on the other hand - is a terrific small camel. There's no
point in comparing it with real ones. Maybe the real ones should better
look like THAT. :)

How did I KNOW someone was going to get to that?

From the photo I used at

http://www.sunship.com/egypt/giza/phototr1.html

I thought I got pretty close but now I see that I was just lazy. I
suppose that I could adjust my now huge picture (but after I promised to
stop doing large pictures, I really cannot break my promise).

Au contraire, mon frere, WebFerret

is truly amazing! (and VERY reasonably priced as well.)

But perhaps your search method is different from mine. I searched
"camel.jpg" until I was reminded what a two hump camel is called and
changed to "bactrian.jpg" and found that photo in NO time; in fact I had
to interrupt my drawing of Salome to look at it. (multi-tasking is so
great!)

Do they? I didn't actually look at the main page. I was sent by
WebFerret directly to that photo.

Knowing that anything is possable with perl, and haveing a spare user
account to test it in becasue it could have just as easily done a
rm -fr /
I had to try it. and sure enough its a hello world script.
/me wonders why this wasn't used as the example in the perl book he
got to learn perl with. :)

Now dose any one know of a programe that can translate this into
readable perl?

I've seen one on a friends computer. Camel-shaped program which
translates itself to a more easily human-readable form, followed by an
outline of the camel made using | - / and \.

Camels AFAIK have TWO humps , so neither of theese perlscripts show camels.
They show that other kind of camellike being with only one hump which english
name eludes me at the present time.

Hmm since the dansih word is dromedar and I can find the word dromedary in the
source I'm guesssing the english name is dromedary.

Btw what does THIS script show when executed ?

A quick look tells me that since the source contains words such a camel and
dromedary and camelhumps it is some sort of wordplay or educational lessson
explain that this is really a dromedary since it only have one hump ..
But that's just a guess.

Camels may have one hump or two.

Dromedary camels are one-humped. (Camelus dromedarius)

Bactrian camels are two-humped. (Camelus bactrianus, or Camelus ferus)

Ah, so there is also a feril sub-species! :-)

So the rest of you can remember...

       Dromedaries are 1-humped chumps,
Bactrians though - they have have 2 humps,
But I swear on gilt enamel
There isn't any 3-humped camel! (with apolgies to Ogden Nash)

But if anyone wants to asciify a 3-humper... please - be my guest!

----

Many folk will recall the original Nash ditty:

    The one-L lama, he's a priest,
    The two-L llama, he's a beast,
But I'll bet a silk pyjama
    There isn't any three-L lllama.

It has been told me that they DO have these in Chicago - when a big enough
fire breaks out that they need 3 engines (or more) to attend, it's known
in the fire service there as a "three-alarmer"!

Anyway, the Nash poem isn't much of a mnemonic, because you still might mix
up the first 2 lines of the poem quite easily. So for a true mnemonic, recall:

"Double the number of L's, and double the number of Legs!"
        =======================================================

Not bad eh? (My own.)
And, of course, it would make a lllama some sort of insect!

For a mnemonic on the camels, just remember that bactrians, from Bactria,
i.e. mostly Afganistan, have more hills on them, to go with the hilly
terrain there, (especially as opposed to Arabia!!)

So now you know. And let's see a pic of that 3-humper...

(Sorry for the delay) Or for a better mnemonic, Dromedary camels have on
hump. The letter D has one hump. Bactrian camels have two humps; the
letter B has two humps. Imagine the first letter in the camel's name
lying down on the camel's back.

Oh how brilliant! And how obvious, (that it should have been), like most
brilliant things are obvious, once you see them. Yes, a perfect mnemonic!

So now, all we need is a nice pic of a three-humped camel.

Bother it - I've gone and done it myself.

The Dromedary has one hump,
The Bactrian's a two-humped chump,
But you can write on hard enamel
There never was a three-humped camel! (NOT Ogden Nash!)

So in view of the mnemonic above, I dub this an Exterran camel...
