Viewing ANSI Art on Linux ?

Hi,
I would like to be able to view ansi art on my linux virtual console
like one can on a dos console. However if I should try to 'cat' an ansi
art file on to the console all i see is garbage characters of some
latin character set.

Pardon? Both the Linux console and xterm support ANSI control sequences. I've
viewed ANSI art in both.

Maybe your terminal is interpreting UTF-8, or perhaps it's set to the wrong
terminal type. Can you upload the file somewhere for other Linux users to try?

Thank you for your help. 

Which file do you want me to upload. My console config files or ansi
files. I have this problem with just about any ansi file. Oddly enough
if I startup and exit the "mdraw" program available from ibiblio.org it
does something to my console so that henceforth until I reboot or reset
my terminal shows ansi are beautifully. I checked with "displayfont"
that none of my console fonts are changed even after running "mdraw"
however I can now "cat" any ansi art to the terminal and it works till
such time the terminal is reset. 
My console configurations are the default on debian (ustable , most
likely same as stable)
I don't understand this. Of course I don't understand a lot :)

I use SuSE Linux with KDE 3 desktop. If you open shell console and change 
the font to courier, it looks fine. (Settings/Font/Custom... on the window 
menu)
