Reader Robert Furman emailed me, saying: "I was reading an old post for a
program called 'Gifscii Mac', is there such an animal for the Apple ][
series computer?"

As I read his question, a thought flashed through my mind, how about a
Gifscii server? You would go to a web page, enter a url to a GIF you put
in your public html or ftp folder, maybe enter some parameters (ie columns
and lines, etc), and press the button. It converts the GIF and puts the
results on screen, which you can copy and paste or download.

Now the question is, who will set it up?

Now the question is : Why?

Just get a C compiler and make Gifscii on the apple - II. By the time
you go through an internet connection through your modem, your computer
could have the picture decoded already!

Unless you're worried about larger gifs, I don't think a gifscii server
is that necessary. It would be easy to set up, though.

Good - no, GREAT - idea!

No Bob, the question is, HOW to set it up! :-)

Is it easy to do? Are there any FAQs about this?

Cheers
Tony

It is a fairly easy process to set up something like this. One would write a
script to retrieve the gif from a URL and pipe it through the Gifscii program
and then return the output to the person who made the query. If you some one
is willing to put the scripts on their web server I would be happy to write the
form and a perl script to handle the request. Feel free to reply through
private mail if you are interested. Thanks.
