Martin Atkins wrote: > > There's a cool Java-based Star Wars ASCIImation at: > http://www.fortunecity.com/tatooine/lucas/339/page1.html >... Yeah, it was announced on Slashdot ... pretty damn cool. This is the beginning of his attempt to animate the entire Episode IV (A New Hope). I e-mailed the author and told him to come join us in alt.ascii-art.animation; he had no idea we existed! Unfortunately the Java version only seems to work on Netscape Navigator for Windows (and Linux, with a bit of hackery); on MacOS and various Unixes it doesn't seem to work. However, instructions on viewing it using C, perl, elisp, and probably a couple of other languages can be found if you trawl through the Slashdot comments at http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=99%2F05%2F22%2F1341217 -- you'll need the jar utility for decompressing Java archives, though. It's a cool idea and sure it must have been (and will be, since it's not the whole movie yet) a lot of work. Just one thing: The "subtitles" are a bit fast if english is not your native language. Maybe you can decrease the speed a bit. Will you release the animation as a TXT-File as well? CU, Martin

It needs Java 1.1, which most browsers (IE4+ and NN4) *claim* to support, but there are a few holes in their implementation. Realizing this, readers of Slashdot -- quicker than you could say `may the force be with you' -- hacked together a few other ways of viewing it: http://okcomputer.antiflux.org/~superfly/asciimation.html I viewed it using the one-line perl program. mmmmm. perl. Gonna learn that one day soon. -- Matthew `mpt26 @ student . canterbury . ac . nz' Thomas Columnist, http://www.newsroom.co.nz/ Webmaster, http://www.ucsa.canterbury.ac.nz/clubs/kakariki/ FAQ maintainer, news:alt.ascii-art
