"Hacker Culture." I hate how Eric Raymond invents this whole "culture,"
which advocates separating from mainstream society, to promote his
beliefs and causes which aren't always true. Some examples:

1. Neoconservatism replaced Libertarianism as the "most popular" on the
Internet. From what I've seen, most people on the Internet are
social-Democrats and anarcho-syndicalists, not conservatives or
libertarians.

2. Java replaced C/C++. Java is good for web development, but it can't
make real binary software without the virtual machine to run it, plus
it's slow and not meant for it. Raymond just likes the fact that class
files run across operating systems, so he announces that the new
"language of choice" is Java, replacing C++. He is just being a Linux
activist. And idiot sheep follow him.

3. Removing words from the dictionary because this OS is dead, etc.
That is taken right out of 1984; that's how they would promote
the Party and crush opposition. And Raymond promotes Linux.

All news sources take his jargon file seriously, especially this "Hacker
vs Cracker vs Script Kiddie" nonsense. Why? It's all crap!

says he with a GEEK code sig block...

Hmmm shall we decipher it???

found this nice decoder...

<http://www.ebb.org/ungeek/>

comes back with the following:

-------------------------------------------
GEEK TYPE CODE [GCS/M/CC]

Geek of Computer Science, Geek of Math, Geek of Communications.

GEEK DRESS CODE [d-]

I'm usually in jeans and a t-shirt.

GEEK SHAPE CODE [s-:+]

I look up to most people. I'm a little rounder than most.

GEEK AGE CODE [a---]

My age is 15-19.

GEEK COMPUTERS CODE [C+++]

You mean there is life outside of Internet? You're shittin' me! I haven't
dragged myself to class in weeks.

GEEK UNIX CODE [UL+]

I use GNU/Linux exclusively. I not only have a unix account, but I slam VMS
any chance I get.

GEEK PERL CODE [P]

I know Perl exists, but that's all.

GEEK GNU/LINUX CODE [L++++]

I am a GNU/Linux wizard. I munch C code for breakfast and have enough room
left over for a kernel debugging. I have so many patches installed that I
lost track about ten versions ago. GNU/Linux newbies consider me a net.god.

GEEK EMACS CODE [E---]

Emacs sucks! vi forever!!!

GEEK WORLD WIDE WEB CODE [W++(--)]

My tendencies on this issue range from: "I have a homepage. I surf daily. My
homepage is advertised in my .signature.", to: "A pox on the Web! It wastes
time and bandwidth and just gives the uneducated morons a reason to clutter
the Internet."

GEEK USENET CODE [N+++]

I read so many news groups that the next batch of news comes in before I
finish reading the last batch, and I have to read for about 2 hours
straight before I'm caught up on the morning's news. Then there's the
afternoon...

GEEK USENET ORACLE CODE [o?]

Usenet Oracle? I don't even know what that is...

GEEK KIBO CODE [K?]

Kibo? I don't even know what that is...

GEEK MICROSOFT WINDOWS CODE [w(--)]

My tendencies on this issue range from: "Ok, so I use MS Windows, I don't
have to like it.", to: "MS Windows is a joke operating system. Hell, it's
not even an operating system. NT is Not Tough enough for me either. 95 is
how may times it will crash an hour."

GEEK OS/2 CODE [O?]

OS/2? I don't even know what that is...

GEEK MACINTOSH CODE [M-(--)]

My tendencies on this issue range from: "Macs suck. All real geeks have a
character prompt.", to: "Macs do more than suck. They make a user stupid by
allowing them to use the system without knowing what they are doing. Mac
weenies have lower IQs than the fuzz in my navel."

GEEK VMS CODE [V?]

VMS? I don't even know what that is...

GEEK POLITICS & SOCIAL ISSUES CODE [PS+(---)]

My tendencies on this issue range from: "My whole concept of liberalism is
that nobody has the right to tell anybody else what to do, on either side
of the political fence. If you don't like it, turn the bloody channel.",
to: "Repent left-wing sinners and change your wicked evil ways.
Buchanan/Robertson in '96."

GEEK POLITICS & ECONOMIC ISSUES CODE [PE(++)]

My tendencies on this issue range from: "Distrust both government and
business.", to: "Keep the government off the backs of businesses.
Deregulate as much as possible."

GEEK CYPHERPUNKS CODE [Y+]

I have an interest and concern in privacy issues, but in reality I am not
really all that active or vocal.

GEEK PGP CODE [PGP-]

I don't have anything to hide.

GEEK STAR TREK CODE [t+]

It's a damn fine TV show and is one of the only things good on television
any more.

GEEK BABYLON 5 CODE [5?]

Babylon 5? I don't even know what that is...

GEEK X FILES CODE [X+]

I've Converted my family and watch the show when I remember. It's really
kinda fun.

GEEK ROLE-PLAYING CODE [R]

Role-Playing? That's just something to do to kill a Saturday afternoon.

GEEK TELEVISION CODE [tv]

I watch only the shows that are actually worthwhile, such as those found on
PBS.

GEEK BOOKS CODE [b+]

I enjoy reading, but don't get the time very often.

GEEK DILBERT CODE [DI+]

I read Dilbert daily, often understanding it.

GEEK DOOM CODE [D+(---)]

My tendencies on this issue range from: "It's a fun, action game that is a
nice diversion on a lazy afternoon.", to: "To hell with Doom, I miss Zork."

THE GEEK CODE [G]

I know what the geek code is and even did up this code.

GEEK EDUCATION CODE [e]

Finished High School.

GEEK HOUSING CODE [h!]

I am stuck living with my parents!

GEEK RELATIONSHIPS CODE [r--]

People just aren't interested in dating me.

GEEK SEX CODE [z--]

Gender undisclosed. Not having sex because I just can't get any...
-------------------------------------------
That decoder takes all the fun out of it... :(

Hmm, that came out garbled (at least here).
Here's a fixed version:

What the heck You should really clean

This is a problem of quoting/parsing of news articles.
Google has this with lines where the first char that's not a space is
. | > or the last char is a \ (and probably a few more)
