When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
'HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT.'

VISIONS OF SUGAR PLUMS
The following recipe for sugarplums came from GlassCat's Visions of
Sugarplums site, which contains many old recipes. GlassCat says "Some of
the recipes are old family ones. Some are drawn from my own collection of
very old cookbooks, or have been researched from other very old
cookbooks. All are taste tested and approved by my family and friends".
Thin Syrup
1 pound of plums
1/2 pound of sugar
pint of water
Thick Syrup
2 pounds of sugar
2 tablespoons of water
Make a thin syrup of half a pound of sugar and a pint of water. Slit a
pound of plums down the seam and put them into the syrup. Poach gently
until
only just tender, taking care that they remain covered with the syrup, or
they will lose their color. Cool, cover and refrigerate overnight.
The following day make a thick syrup of two pounds of sugar and two
tablespoons of water. Boil until a little dropped in a bowl of cold water
makes a thick but soft ball. Remove from heat and allow to become cold.
Then carefully drain the plums as completely as possible from the first
syrup and place them gently in the second thick syrup.
Reheat and scald only until the plums look clear, taking care that
they are completely covered in the syrup. Allow to cool again. Then empty
them into a shallow ceramic or glass bowl, cover tightly and allow them to
develop flavor in the refrigerator for a week. Take them out and spread
them apart on dishes or plates. Cover loosely with baking paper, put them
in a warm, dry place and turn them every day until dry. If you put them
in a very low warming oven, turning them every half hour, at first, then
every hour, etc., they can be dried much more quickly. At this stage a
home fruit dryer can also be used if desired.

would confess she had had her doubts about the quantity of flour.
Everybody had something to say about it, but nobody said or thought it
was at all a small pudding for a large family. It would have been flat
heresy to do so. Any Cratchit would have blushed to hint at such a thing.
At last the dinner was all done, the cloth was cleared, the hearth swept,
and the fire made up. The compound in the jug being tasted, and
considered perfect, apples and oranges were put upon the table, and a
shovel-full of chestnuts on the fire. Then all the Cratchit family drew
round the hearth, in what Bob Cratchit called a circle, meaning half a
one; and at Bob Cratchit's elbow stood the family display of glass. Two
tumblers, and a custard-cup without a handle.
These held the hot stuff from the jug, however, as well as golden goblets
would have done; and Bob served it out with beaming looks, while the
chestnuts on the fire sputtered and cracked noisily. Then Bob proposed:
`A Merry Christmas to us all, my dears. God bless us.'
Which all the family re-echoed.
`God bless us every one.' said Tiny Tim, the last of all.

Let's say you are at a community college in a small town. Say it is a Sunday and very few people are in the computer lab mailing emails. So in order to save money maybe, the school uploads it's email and posts not every day. Also I wonder about some non-moderated groups going thru some swear word filter or racial slur filter or spam filter that slows the process down also. Anyway, that is how it was explained to me. I wish I had a detailed source of this info but I got the explanation in email when I was a only on the internet 2 days. So I didn't save the email or ask for a website to get more details about it. Which is what I do nowadays. I am still looking for more detail on this question but I can't read every post in news.newusers.questions to find the super detailed answer I want. Another thing, some access links to the internet backbone may not have the strongest hardware to upload their posts and email. So they may crash from time to time. Taking a few days to figure out who made backup copies of all posts in the last two days. Old hardware may not be able to handle the strain of increased numbers of us getting online. Thank goodness for the National Science Foundation that is run by our tax dollars. Lastly, Spokane WA is finally over it's 10 days without power because of the ice storm. 100,000 homes were without power so maybe some ISP's were hit and some emails and posts were damaged while in route thru there or originating from there.
