Here is something I just made. It is a bit wide (144 chars) but it looks quite good in 6 point Terminal. LMKWYT. (BTW the front is
to the right)

I'm sorry, you're right (though I thought it was 72, but never mind).

I think it was around 74 chars... But then some ascii-arts won't fit so u
could increase the charsperline in this NG.

Uh...
it may be interesting to know how much exactly a line can be long!
I said 63, you all 73/74.
I remember, some years ago (when ftp was a stuff avalaible only to
few people...), that uuencode was using that max lenght to encode
binary files, anyone remember how much it is ?

 obascii: a char-meter (not a Charmender LOL!)

Netiquette? Well, no. More like, do you want people to be able to view
it? You should expect people to be able to view 80 columns. Then remove
a few to allow for some indentation if somebody replies to your post.
You'll end up somewhere between 70 and 75. For normal text it may not be
a big deal if it gets wrapped at the receiving end, but for pictures...

Your page is black-on-black in Netscape 3 and appears in a proportional
font in Netscape 4.

I'm sorry, I forgot that Outlook Trashpress ENFORCES a wordwrap at 132 chars.

Does anybody know how to get rid of this???

I could send it as an attachment or you can try my ASCII-art page at

Strange, I tried with Netscape 4.72 and everything looks right, it even
works on my linux box (V4.5)...

Still, I changed my font definitions to "Courier New,Courier,Lucida Console,Fixedsys".
Are there any other fonts I should include?

Unfortunately I don't have Netscape 3 to test the background color, and I'm
totally in the dark on how to fix this.

Thanks anyway, I'm still learning HTML, so any help is appreciated.

$Righteo, let's get this debate settled.
$I'm using a vt100 terminal, which is probably one of the most basic
$environments available. The character meter thingy below is 80
$characters wide and just about stretches across the entire width of the
$terminal without wrapping. Pine's text extends to character 78, so I
$would suggest the following:
$80 characters iff there's no chance of anyone replying.
$78 characters normally (won't wrap when replied to).
$72 characters or less if you expect a lot of followups/rediddles of
$rediddles of rediddles of your original artwork etc.
$
$Oh, and the McQ standard for .sigs is a maximum of 80 characters x 4 lines...

dos tems in win98 are 80 to 79 depending on the font seting you use

Huh? "Font"? You should not include *any* "fonts" if you want things to
work properly. You should *remove* all your font
definitions/declarations/whatever. Trust the user to know what font
looks best on his computer. I see that you use <pre> tags for the
pictures, so you've done that bit right and any readers who see fonts at
all should see it correctly as long as you just leave the fonts alone.

I do see one bad mistake in your html. You should replace all &
characters with  &amp;  and all  <  characters with  &lt;

You can use this little toy I made:

Use MIME/Quoted printable instead of UUEncode: Outlook Express won't wrap the
message at all. But also nobody using Outlook Express for Windows (the iMac
version works correctly, by the way. Don't know about Unix version) will be able
to quote your messages when replying

(132 chars??? if I set line wrap at *80* chars, the text falls offscreen, even
with maximized window, and I'm using 1024x768 res.)
