For those of you who are only interested in looking at a cute pic, here
is "Naughty Frogstein stares at Shy Birdstein" at:
The sample pic is posted at:

select: Half Space Technique
Looking at the big picture of responses on the Half Space Technique, I
think I need to add:
=> a clarification that the Half Space Technique is about positioning
characters in half space locations ANYWHERE AND AS OFTEN AS YOU LIKE in
an html pic. To this end, I have made a simple composite html pic,
"Naughty Frogstein stares at Shy Birdstein" that will illustrate this
and the other points below.
The flipside of this particular clarification coin is that the Half
Space Technique is NOT about centering text on an html page, anyone can
do that (it won't require any greatness ;-)) Centering is just a means
to an end, but the Half Space Technique requires more than just
centering.
=> I need to make the generalizations of the Half Space Technique more
explicit (I thought that the generalizations were quite obvious.) To
this end, the same composite html pic will illustrate:
- use of multiple half spaces
- the Deletion Method of the Half Space Technique (we already know about
the Insertion Method that I described in the basic exposition of the
Half Space Technique in an earlier article)
(In this exposition, I will follow a common structure:
1st tell them what you are going to tell them;
2nd tell them;
3rd tell them what you told them.
The above is the 1st part, I continue with the 2nd part.)
The following composite html pic "Naughty Frogstein stares at Shy
Birdstein" shows that:
- Naughty Frogstein's eyes have been moved forward by half a space
- Shy Birdstein's head has been moved backward by half a space (relative
to her body) and
- Shy Birdstein's hat have been moved back by another half space
(relative to her head. In total, Shy Birdstein's hat has been moved
backward by two half spaces relative to her body.)
Therefore, this example shows:
- the use of multiple half spaces, case in point: Birdstein's hat;
- the multiple deployment of the Half Space Technique in a composite
html pic, cases in point are: Frogstein's eyes, Birdstein's head, and
Birdstein's hat. In other words, with some diddling, you can always
place characters in half space locations ANYWHERE AND AS OFTEN AS YOU
LIKE in the html pic.
The example chosen is deliberately kept extremely simple to convey the
message in the simplest possible way, but the deployment of the Half
Space Technique itself can be as sophisticated as you want/need.

You may have noticed that in the above example, some lines are _shorter_
than others, whereas in the basic exposition of the Half Space
Technique, some lines are _longer_ than others. And you guessed right,
the basic exposition of the Half Space Technique that I posted earlier,
used the Insertion Method, the above example uses the Deletion Method.
The two methods are quite obviously dualistic. Oh well, I will spend the
effort to formulate them in an explicit way.
Half Space Technique - Insertion Method, will:
=> shift all characters to the right of the insertion point by half a
space to the right;
=> _and also_ shift all characters to the left of the insertion point by
half a space to the left.
Half Space Technique - Deletion Method, will:
=> shift all characters to the right of the deletion point by half a
space to the left;
=> _and also_ shift all characters to the left of the deletion point by
half a space to the right.
In the example given, a single space was deleted on line 02 to the right
of Birdstein's head, shortening the line by one space, and the browser
moves the entire line including Frogstein's eyes and Birdstein's head,
half a space to the right.
Two spaces were deleted on line 01 to the right of Birdstein's hat,
shortening the line my two spaces, and the browser moves Birdstein's hat
two half spaces to the right. You can also see at this point, why I said
"two half spaces" and NOT a single space. The visual effect is only
deceptively the same, but the implementation of "two half spaces" is
quite different from that of a single space.
... and now comes the 3rd part of the exposition: tell them what you
told them ...
In summary, this article goes a little beyond the very basics of the
Half Space Technique, showing that one can position characters on half
space locations ANYWHERE AND AS OFTEN AS YOU LIKE in an html pic.
Moreover, this article shows how one can use multiple half space shifts
in an html pic.

And after the disclosure, they said things along the lines of illegal ascii whatever they mean by that term. This topic has been discussed innumerous times in the past, and each time, the ascii purists could not sustain their arguments. In particular, they could not deny the additions to the ascii standard, and therefore, the socalled ascii purists don't practice pure ascii either. > Rah, rah, rah.
