Monotype.com Retraction

A few days ago, I posted a rave about the "beauty" of Monotype.com due to
smoother letters and lines. (There just aren't enough Fixed-width fonts to
suit my hunger). Anyway, I visited ...

   American Gothic by Grant Wood
   http://www.inetw.net/~mullen/woodg.htm

... and while the image was really cool, the characters were misaligned
slightly and I use the Monotype font for fixed width on Netscape. I
switched to Courier New, however, and everything lined up perfectly!

I noticed this at first when I was composing an e-mail to a friend of mine,
showing her a few things about ascii art. I cut and pasted an image from
the Star Wars post that zne...@ovtsbbg.pbz (Martin Atkins) made
recently and decided to yellow the Star Wars and make the stars in the
background white, showing my friend how they can be colored in an HTML
E-Mail. I noticed that when I was coloring them, the letters were shifting
slighty to the right, throwing everything out of alignment. Then when I
view web pages with colored text under Monotype, it's out of alignment as
well. But this does not happen if the letters are all the same color.
Everything is perfect.

So I guess if there are slight imperfections in monotype.com, then they may
not be so evident with smaller images.... but once you get up around 50-200
characters in width, it becomes really obvious.

So, that's my contribution to the fort for today.

Have fun

oh no! While some email readers may support
the html tags, there are many that do not. Your
beautifully colored email picture may very well
look like a bunch of html tagged garbage to most
people.. I hope that you use good judgement when
forwarding that kind of email on.

Oh, I already know what kind of software she uses and she said she can receive
and read HTML. :) I experimented by sending one to my sister to see if AOL can
read non-AOL HTML e-mail. She could, except that the Red is going out in her
monitor. <g>

Did you ever see JAVA-enabled E-Mail? That stuff is COOL.

Whew, I'm glad to hear it... for a moment I thought
that you might be considering sending that coded
stuff to an unsuspecting mailing list or newsgroup.
Obviously you must be using AOL 4.0-- otherwise the
ASCII art would look skewed on AOL's system.
