A sig starts with "sigdashes" - you don't have them.
It has trailing whitespace and it's way over the McQ limit.
And it looks like the worst ASCII map of UK I have ever seen.

Whine some more, bucko. If you can do better, then do. Otherwise shut the
hell up.

And why would we want to? This is a ascii art newsgroup, if you don't
want to see large beautiful pieces or ascii art, go somewhere else.

This from someone who complains about the lack of sig-dashes in a post.
Sheesh.

Greg,
Master of a beautifully large sig.
(Now show me how you could do better in 4 lines)

'scuse me, my sigs go up to 8 lines, and I ain't reducing them for
nobody. If you or anyone else gripes about it, I toss my 256-line ascii
into my sigs. Don't get many complaints about the 8-liners after that.
This 4-line limit is nothing but a load of crap that only anal-retentive
idiots really care about. I rarely get any complaints about my sigs.

Yeah, but loses 99% of the artistic expression. One of the things the
'net is about is self-expression. If it takes more than 4 lines to do it,
go right ahead. There's to much to me to fit in 4 lines or less. True,
none of the ascii's I use are my own, but they still say a little about
myself...

Rubbish, if this wasn't a follow-up I would never guess that that was a
book. Where did you get this list of *rules* to do with sig
generation???!?!?.

BTW your version of the book sig uses extended ASCII characters which
not everyone can view. Get your facts straight.

Looks like you don't understand.
Signatures end with the fourth line after the sigdashes. Period.
You can have whatever ASCII art in the post before the sigdashes -
but if it's over four lines it cannot be part of a signature. Geddit?

Yes, sigdashes are required before a signature. Btw, you don't have any.

Now, on the subject of 'doing better" - how do you define this?
If you want the above book in a proper signature (four lines, remember?)
then the information of your name, address, and quote needs to be in it.
And possibly an ascii representation of a book that fits within four lines:

> --
> |||  Greg Webster Kic...@vcn.bc.ca

> | .. ||  on the Earth's back I have travelled far.

There - it has everything and a Greg quote on top of it! How's that?

Now, if there wasn't a restriction on the length of a signature
then any text can be made a signature by prepending the sigdashes.
If you accept this then you probably won't mind what I say because
it now is in my signature - note the sigdashes at the beginning! :-)

Aaahh, but Sven, the length of an allowed signature is a function
of the news reader/system/setup/whatever-you-want-to-call-it. Not
*everyone* is restricted to four lines. ;^) Observe:

The 4 line sig limit is advisory, and largely outdated.

Ten lines is regarded as outrageously large (a "warlord"); large
attention getting sig variants are best reserved for the occasional
post where someone has annoyed you!

Yes, your appendix is eight lines and you need not cut it;
it just happens to not fit the definition of a "signature".

> If you or anyone else gripes about it, I toss my 256-line ascii into my sigs.

Oh, a Kibo-wannabe. Seen those before:
"If you think my sig it long then you should see it appended twice!"
"Other people have worse sigs so mine is perfect!"
I am always impressed by people who think this way. NOT!

> This 4-line limit is nothing but a load of crap that only anal-retentive
> idiots really care about. I rarely get any complaints about my sigs.

It's not the number of complaints that makes an appendix a signature -
but the 4x80 box. If 320 characters aren't enough then a gazillion more
probably won't suffice, either.

Yes, it does not contain the picture of the book as before.
You didn't expect to see it in four line, did you?

> One of the things the 'net is about is self-expression.
> If it takes more than 4 lines to do it, go right ahead.

Then why don't you put your "self-expression" *before* the signature?
If everything you can ever express can fit into eight lines
then why don't you put up a web site with it and quit posting?

> There's to much to me to fit in 4 lines or less.

Well, not everybody is capable of putting his name and address into four lines.
It's an art form that apparently not everyone understands.
Signatures probably aren't for everyone.

Exactly, it's been in there for years. It's outdated. It had a purpose,
once, but now it's just another excuse to flame newbies. Not to mention
that your posting this anal-retentive crap to an ASCII art newsgroup. Why
don't you go organize your paper clip collection and leave us big-siggers
alone.

*sigh* Some people never get it.
Append what you like. Call it a signature.
But if it's over four lines - it is NOT a signature.

You're right, that's an accurate, complete signature - and it all fits in
4 lines! It's also incredibly boring. I'd rather see a big sig with some
originality then a 4-liner like yours, and I think a lot of people would
agree with me.

And some newsreaders/senders, such as PINE, can be configured by sysops
such that .sigs *must* be four lines or less.

I have been watching this discussion long enough, and have decided to put
in my own 3 cents(as compared to Sven's 1 cent). I really dont care how
long someone's sig is,as long as it looks nice and isnt EXTREMELY
LONG(like 20 lines). And, just for the benefit of those out there who
think that sigs should have only 4 lines,I have made mine that long,
since 4 lines will hold it,but dont be surprised if it turns to 5 or 6
in the future,it really doesnt matter.

But...when you consider that people are spending hours (days!?)
downloading pure and utter crap from the internet as a hobby, the
miniscule amount of bandwidth "wasted" for an ascii art signature of more
than four lines isn't really a problem. My sig is 8, and it's staying
that way. It isn't offensive, it's well put together, and I think makes a
nice artistic statement about who I am.

Yours truly, the one and only Kickstart.

(Huge argument about whether .sigs should be more than 4 lines omitted)

A couple of years ago this same discussion happened on this newsgroup.

Your site sysadmin may have a policy of no .sigs over 4 lines, and
several newsreaders (including 'nn' which I use) have this as a
default limit, but (and that's what's so nice about the net) no-one
forces you to do anything.

But, as someone on this newsgroup eloquently put it, asking the
alt.ascii-art newsgroup about the proper length of .signatures
was like 'putting Orson Welles in charge of the Twinkies'.

The sensible limit surely comes when your .sig approaches the length of
your message. This limit can be stretched if your .signature is original,
pretty, or changed often.

Another thing to remember is that alt.ascii-art reshapes your head.
People who are not ascii-artists may well see your .signature as a
meaningless jumble of characters. Obfuscated 'C' programmers may try to
compile it. After comments about my signature, I now only use it for this
newsgroup.

My advice is to think positively about this 4-line thing. Can you fit
your .signature into 4 lines? Think of it as a challenge. Anyone can
make honkin' great GIF-to-ASCII image, but it takes art to do it in four.

...and remember...

Beware of Geeks bearing GIF's.

Cheers.

Well, if it just takes a few people who agree with you to convince you
then a few lines more will probably convince you that I do have an
incredibly great signature.

Sig DSW! Where is Kibo when you need him?
