I was wondering if any of you very talented people could do something
cute with my name for my signature. I am an animal lover (especially
cats), and a gun enthusiast.

I also want to take the opportunity to tell you folks, that both my
daughter and I are VERY VERY impressed by the talent here.

Thanks in advance!!

Katherine,

Some of these people here are better artists like I am and can do fancier
things but there is a small ascii of a kitten. I have found that whether it
looks right or not depends on the newsreader you use and whether it has a fixed
width font. If it doesn't look right, maybe you can cut and paste it and fix
it up, or maybe someone here has something better to offer.

Schrodinger's cat:
Schrodinger was a scientist (?) who posed a question something like:
...is the cat in the covered box or not? or..is the cat in the covered
box alive or not? You *really* wouldn't know until you opened the box.

Ahh I have a joke for that:

"I was flat-sitting for Erwin Schrodinger the other week. He said to
keep an eye on his cat, but that wasn't a problem. Half the time it
was like it wasn't even there!"

Explanation from bloke called Ben in book:
"Schrodinger's famous thought experiment suggests that if a
cat is placed in a box where a 50-50 quantum effect determines whether
or not it is poisoned, it exists in a part-life/part-death state that
cannot be resolved until an observation of the quantum effect is made
... ow, my splitting sides!"

The quantum theory view of the world (applicable when only a small
amount of matter is present) will tell you of, say, a radioactive
atom, that there are at any one time -- coexisting -- a 45% chance
it has decayed and a 55% chance it hasn't.

A room-sized object such as a geiger counter either definitely has
gone "click" or definitely hasn't. At what stage does the indefinite
become definite? when it's observed?? so, let's put the atom
unobserved with a counter, which pulls a hammer, which breaks a
glass of cyanide, which kills a cat. Are you telling me the cat
is neither definitely alive nor definitely dead until we open
the crate? No, that would be silly. Why not? well, there is no
one accepted answer yet. If we knew that, we'd know a lot more about
the world than we do. As to Swearinger's Dog.......

Except that Erwin Shroedinger was smarter than that. All he said was
"if you say the outcome is not determined until a measurement is made
does this mean you really believe the cat is both alive and dead until
a measurement is made? Or, if not, why not??"

IMO it proves that view has absurd conequences; but as to why not....

That, my friend, would be an "observation" of the state of the cat, just
as listening for it's movement or lifting the box to see it would be.
Back to square one. ;-)

Except that would be observing it. It's really no more than,
"if an event is not observed, does it really happen" (yes).

Ahaa.. simply give the crate a good shake and see if the cat meows
at you. Or, smear your hand with tuna and stick it in the crate.
If you feel somethnig licking the tuna off your hand, its very
likely the cat is alive.

<bluff mode=physics>
Actually, it's a lot more than "if an event is not observed, does it
really happen." What it is is:

"an event has only had happened once it has been observed"

Until you observe the cat being alive and dead the cat is (actually it
isn't but oh well) a quantum waveform. It is in both states, until you
observe it and collapse the quantum waveform into either state 1 or 2
(dead or alive). From that time on, the event has happened an
indeterminate time before it was observed to.

However, this is all rather academic (heh).. because although the
Shrodinger's cat thought experiment is an interesting thing, it doesn't
actually apply to quantum theory anymore.

It raised some nasty problems about what could be considered an
observer, and what the act of observation consisted of.

So now (I think ICBW.. actually IPAW) those crazy physicists have
decided that the possibility of interaction with a particle collapses
the waveform.
</bluff>

However all this has very, very little to do with ascii-art.

bad bad attempt at some kind of molecule atomy type thing..

Ah. The real question is "if quantum-scale events are described
by coexisting probabilities and room-scale events are definite,
where and how does the transition occur? if you link a roomscale
event to a quantum event, do you make it indefinite??" No. That
would be silly. And while "the fact that it is being observed
into the roomscale world" may make things definite, "the conscioussness
of the person observing" is damn all to do with it. Such an
explanation is LIKE saying things don't exist if not observed
in its general approach, i.e. misguided.

My own take is that the whole system behaves according to what the
determining elements of the whole system are: it is non-locally
connected so as to maintain indeterminacy (but never to pass
room-scale information). It figuratively "knows" whether there
is macroscopic measuring instruments in the system, and if there
are then the system is determinate. Rather like the photon
"knows" whether it is approaching one slot or two.

The cat is entirely alive or entirely dead, because the atom
is definitely decayed or definitely not, because coupling it
to massive measuring instruments has collapsed the waveform ---
whether or not you opened the box yet.
