We haven't had this discussion in a while. In fact we haven't had any
in a while.

If you were to name the top 20 ascii artists of all time who would
they be.

If you can please include a link to their works if you can.

Off the top of my head I nominate :

Bug - http://www.asciipr0n.com/bug (didn't he use to have an english
site too ? )

and ..

SSt - http://www.ascii-art.net/

Because I'm a huge fan of their work.
There are others that deserve to be on the list , but I'm short for time
at the moment.

Grimjack and Asphyxia, from the 203 BBS scene. Not sure if either of them
has a webpage, but Grimjack was in Acid for a while.

bug, nabis and... jg of course :)

That's my top 3 but for the rest I'd say (in no particular order): fsc,
lgb, hrr, jgs, hjw, and YOU :F_P: ! (I find your recent nudes
impressive! bravo!)

..ah if only I could draw...

As much as I like them I am starting to be bugged by them. The
problem is that most of them are Playboy models. I have nothing
against Playboy models, they are tastefull[0] and naked. It is
because they aren't my modles. I don't own the rights to them. If I
ever decided to publish my work then almost all of my ascii pr0n would
not but up for publication. I have been thinking about getting some
buisness cards printed up and some release forms so I can get my own
'talent'.

> ..ah if only I could draw...

You don't have to know how to draw. You just have to be able to
recognize a bad byte from a good byte. Even after taking art classes
for years I still can not put pin to paper and get something to come
out the way I want it. Fortunatly ascii is very forgiving and allows
for lots of edits. Rought out the form and then fix all the bad bytes.
Kind of like was mentioned in that BBC interview that was posted here
a few months ago.

[0] I am refering to the natural ones, not the plastic ones with drug
problems like Anna Nichole. Or the ones that just have drug problems
like Ellisa Bridges who died as a result of drugs but still looked
fscking amazing and all natural while hiding a drug problem.

I'm fairly certain that you haven't infringed any copyright laws, unless
you scanned the pics and converted them electronically/mechanically
(which you obviously didn't). Of course I'm not a lawyer.

It would be a legal nightmare. I have used the modles 'likeness' which
would be more than enough for them to sue me into the ascii poorhouse
if they wanted to.

So stop telling people who the picture is of. If it's a drawing of a random
girl instead of so-and-so from Playboy they can't do squat.

myflix also draws excellent stuff.

I just noticed that all pictures I like the most have a neat clean style
to them .. Is it coincidence that I myself aspire to draw like that ? -
I think not.

I might have nominated myself if it were not for the fact that I'm not
very productive .. at all :) .. besides I'm too modest to do that.

I also second the nomination of jg ..
Joaquim have said on previous occasion that he doesn't consider himself
a great artist , but I disagree.
His drawings may be simple , but they have a lot a of style to them and
drawing tiny like that is no easy task.
He's also been very productive and his comic has more than just good art
to it .. it's entertaining .. pure and simple.

Greatness is more than just the ability to draw pretty pictures.

jgs or Joan Stack "Queen of ascii" also deserves to be on the list.

Andreas freise ( or a:f ), too.
Not only is he a great artist but he also maintains the ..

some work.

for Honourable mention : Markus Gebhard
Because while he doesn't draw himself , he have with Jave supported the
community greatly . and helped spark interest and discussion of various
ascii-art styles and techniques.

Jave is really a great tools for both beginners and experts alike.

And maybe there should be a hall of shame in which Tran could get the
Lifetime achievement award.

Finally the recognition he deserves ! ;)

I'm not sure what the position is: I think that if you just sit
down and free-hand draw, paint, or typewrite a picture of someone
you don't need permission. Permission is needed if you use a mech-
anism (camera) to mechanically record the image of a real model.

You should check this, but I'm pretty sure it's so.
