If you had witnessed this group over its 5 year life since September 1993 you would have seen that it has varied from "nice to nasty" in periods throughout that time. >I also think that people who insist on responding to these punks ought >to be placed in a filter. Filters and killfiles only hide what is happening from those individuals who use them...they don't make trolls, punks, flamers and their responders go away. If they did we would not have had several outbreaks of "The Stein Wars" over about a 2 year period. The effective answer is for everyone in a newsgroup to strictly ignore those postings and totally resist the temptation to respond to any and all of those postings. That is Usenet's time-honoured anti-troll method and ultimately it reall does work once every user of a newsgroup adopts and strictly adheres to the method. Unfortunately, in a newsgroup like alt.ascii-art that is very difficult to achieve. Regular users of the newsgroup will participate fully but there is a relatively large inflow of newcomers who find "alt.ascii-art"...think that it looks good fun and jump into the newsgroup and engage in any flamewars that may be running at the time. It is my personal choice not use killfiles because in my view they simply put "blinkers" or blindfolds on the users of those killfiles/filters but leave the problems still there and unresolved. Bye,
