The statistics do not bear out your impressions, and I dare say your suggested solution would also be flawed in solving this problem. However, as you say, one should also not be a victim if at all possible. In NSW, Australia you are not supposed to carry weapons or wear body armour (this includes pepper spray, capsicum spray, tear gas, tasers and knives).
