If you, for example, join a music band, but you never bother to practice the songs at home and expect to do all the practicing in front of the other members of the band, they will eventually get pissed off with you for wasting their time. This is a similar situation. When you are new to a newsgroup you are expected to read up on how to do things (read the FAQ, if there is one). If, instead you keep doing things wrong (suggesting you have not read, or at least not made any attempt to understand, the FAQ), sending test messages to the group, asking the same newbie questions we've all already heard a million times, etc, etc, people will react the same way as when somebody won't do their music practice at home before trying to play with the band. It's not so much "exclusive club" as "reading up on the basics". If you are too lazy to do that, you should not play. > And the basis for > all of this hate is fear. No, I think most of us here can very well understand how somebody could want to give, for example, a trip to China, or a new car, higher priority than buying a computer. I think most people can agree that a cheap tool to get access to the net from home can be a very useful thing. The problem is that the company who owns WebTV (and the same with AOL before them) seem to have set up their system in such a way that new people are led to believe that it's OK to just jump in and shout, not bothering to even try to listen to the music that's being played. The result is that there's a high correlation between the group "People who use WebTV" and the group "People who act stupid in newsgroups". This in turn leads people to say things like "WebTV users are stupid", because, in their experience, that is true. When every (and I do mean *every*) WebTV user you have ever come across has acted stupid, there's a chance that you will eventually come to that conclusion. > The world is to huge for just one medium > (I personally maintain a life outside of the computer/internet world.). > We should make room for them all. Are you telling the rest of us to "get a life"? > ALL THAT PERSON WANTED WAS SOME INFORMATION!!!, I agree with you here. I don't see anything insulting or stupid in the original post to this thread. The original poster seems to say "Hi! I'm new. I read the FAQ but I still have trouble. Help?!" Being new is not wrong. Being aware of it, and wanting to do something about it, is a sign of intelligence. Sometimes just "reading up" is not enough. I think this may be such a case. > and as I recall that was > what the internet was developed for. HInt: To turn to someone and say > "get you stupid webtv face outta here is ridiculous and ignorant!! I think you should _use_ the Internet to look up what a "troll" is and how to handle trolls. There are plenty of trolls in this thread (the people from the newsgroups this thread has been crossposted to. Check out these groups and you'll see what I mean...). :-) [followups set] -- (, http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/cgi/asciichat/ /|__--__ . __--__ |\ '__ /|\ _{ _ `.' / `.,_ _________ | _________ _,.'
