In composing that post I fired up Pico and I too tried everything I
could think of.  I think it's just one of those things you give up for
Pico's simplicity.

That's what I used to do in Emacs until I discovered the Ctrl-Q thing.
I'd guess it's the easiest way.  Of course, if you have a decent
telnet/comm program you can bind a key (Shift-ESC, for example) to do
your "Ctrl-R ~/etc/esc+bracket <Enter>" or whatever.  That's what I'd
recommend.
