The space bar, because not everyone's tab is set to the same number
of spaces.  So, if your tab is set to eight spaces and I try to
view it, but my tab is set to four spaces, the file comes out looking
almost as corrupted as that created with a proportional font.  (The
difference is that I can fix yours, I can''t fix what is created
using proportional fonts.)

At one point in time, uuencode/uudecode was more of a standard and
far more wide spread.  MIME is becoming more and more available, but
I think you still might find a lot of people don't have anyway to
read a MIME encoded message.
