Posting ascii art on the web

There are a few readers of this newsgroup who post ascii art on their web
pages, and this article is addressed to them.

I noticed that posting ascii art on the web in gif format gives a cleaner
rendering by the various web browsers, Netscape and Internet Explorer
included. Did you notice that too? I myself am contemplating to gradually
convert to gif for presenting ascii art on the web.

With regard to my specialty, miniatures for cartoons, the gif format has
the added benefit of pretty well absolute control over the font issue. In
other words, no more problems with generating (and optimizing) ascii art
in, say, Monaco, and the viewer viewing it with a different font, say,
Courier. The font issue is less of an issue with large(r) size ascii art,
but with miniatures, it can make or break certain visual effects in
somewhat unpredictable ways.

Moreover, gif has the ability for animation that can be read by any
browser without any plug-ins, although older browsers do not strictly
adhere to the gif standard for animation. But newer browser versions are
becoming quite exact in this regard.
