movie making tips (particularly speed)

I was trying to make an ascii art movie that can just be 'cat'ed on a vt100-compatiible terminal today, but I ran into a problem. A movie which is supposed to take a good two minutes whizzes by in just a second on my xterm. How can I slow things down? As an experiment I added about 100k of nulls bewteen frames but that didn't slow it down all that much. Elijah ------ has 500 frames of an mpeg converted to ascii art (by a program)
