Where it's standard software in *NIX environments and Linux clones, unfortunately this business appears to be in cahoots with Microsoft... In a geeky way though, it's pretty cool the way I access Usenet... I'm currently sitting in front of a Compaq Deskpro running WinNT 4, connected via a 2 Mbps link to a Citrix Metaframe server (running on top of WinNT 4 Terminal Server Edition) on a quad-processor Pentium Pro server (4x 200MHz) with 1 GB RAM. On this remote desktop, I have Outlook Express running. This connects to an Exchange server with a Newsfeed to an internet-based NNTP server. >Free screenshot (in ascii vision and greatly shortend message window) >of slrn: > >0.9.7.4#alt.ascii-art###################################18:25:34####### > 1 D 59:[Anonymous ] Re: looking for a hallway > 2 D 31:[Harry Mason ] `Re: looking for a hallway > 3 D 64:[Anonymous ] `Re: looking for a hallway > 4 D 21:[Marcin Glins] `Re: looking for a hallway >-> D 30:[Anonymous ] `Re: looking for a hallway > 6 - 16:[Sam Blanning] Re: Nerd Boy, episode 336 >#[1/17#unread]#Group:#alt.ascii-art####################--#16/17#(Bot)## > >I'm at work, and would get shot for reading Usenet in its own right, >let alone installing non-standard software... > >#124108#:#Re:#looking#for#a#hallway####################--#15/37#(Bot)## >Waiting for Emacs... > >Amoungst console users slrn is the standered. And even the GUI kids >love its power. I tried slrn many years ago on my NetBSD/Amiga setup. Didn't understand it, but that's because I was 12 and had never clapped eyes on UNIX before; too fond of the AmigaOS to try all that command-line stuff. Just installed Connectix Virtual PC on my desktop at home last week; I finished installing and configuring RedHat Linux on it, and will give slrn a go.
