( From "The Ugly Duckling" by Hans Christian Andersen [1844] .. Modern English translation )
"... But what did he see in the clear stream below?
His own image - no longer a dark, gray bird, ugly and disagreeable to look at, but a graceful and
beautiful swan.

To be born in a duck's nest, in a farmyard, is of no consequence to a bird, if it is hatched from a
swan's egg."

And in the original language .. 19th century Danish :

( Fra "Den grimme lling" af Hans Christian Andersen [1844] )
"... Men hvad saae den i det klare Vand!
Den saae under sig sit eget Billed, men den var ikke lngere en kluntet, sortgraa Fugl, styg og fl,
den var selv en Svane.

Det gjr ikke noget at vre fdt i Andegaarden, naar man kun har ligget i et Svaneg!"

The entire fairytale in both languages can be found here :
http://www.outzen.dk/cisv/ugly.html

Note however that the translation , "prettyfies" ( for (my) lack of a better word ) the word ever so
slightly.
This is however far from what Disney did to "The Little Mermaid".
It ended up being a happy happy joyful and funny story suitable for kids, instead of the sad
romantic lovestory it originally was.
I wonder when Disney decides to do "Romeo & Juliet" ?

Though i prefer reading the tale from my huge red and gold book containing all his fairytales
complete with illustrations.

BTW more nice swans can be found in Andreas Freise's "The Ascii Art Dictionary" located at
http://www.ascii-art.de/
Andreas, if you read this .. I love that dictionary.
