Would this be the correct moment to remark that the # sign which is known to germans only from telephones or computer keyboards is commonly referred to as "Lattenzaun" here, which is best translated as "paling" (as in fence of pales)? On phones it is sometimes referred to as "Raute" (lozenge). Even more remarkable is the popular word for the @ sign which is "Klammeraffe". The term is a composite word. "Klammer" means "cramp", "clip", "bracket" or "to clasp", "Affe" is a monkey or ape. The term originally describes certain long-tailed, tree-climbing south american monkeys. I assume that those terms are descriptive of the actual appearance of the signs.
