     If you have DOS 5.0 or later you can use the EDIT command, which
brings up an ASCII text editor.  To move around your work more easily
without shifting characters to the right as you edit,  press INSERT, 
which  will put the cursor in overstrike mode.  There are some 
limitations,  however.  You can't cut, copy and paste "blocks" of
text, just whole lines if you working more than one line at a time.
This should at least get you started.
