my first ascii art needs help...

Please find below my first attempt at ascii art. (It is my dog - a
Portuguese Water Dog.) I created it by fiddling with a different dog I
found.
I have put it in my signature, but people are telling me it comes out
distorted.
I think it may be due to the font they use for their mail readers -
what do you think, and is there any way around that?
