Thanks, Jonny Some time ago I wrote the piece of code you are looking for. I called the program m(ake)plan.c. You just have to compile it via cc -O mplan.c -o mplan and then say mplan <Text> [Output file] and the <Text> will be written in the manner described above. Without an output filename it goes to stdout. And here it is: --------8<----8<----8<------ mplan.c ----->8---->8---->8----------- #include "stdio.h" main(argc,argv) int argc; char *argv[]; { int i, j, z = 0, jmax; FILE *datptr; switch(argc) { case 2: datptr = stdout; break; case 3: datptr = fopen(argv[2],"w+"); break; default: printf("Usage: mplan <Text> [Output file]\n"); exit(1); break; } jmax = strlen(argv[1]); for(i = 32; i < 128; i++) /* Loop over chars that appear in normal text */ if(z < jmax) /* Stop when all chars have reached the end */ { z = 0; for(j = 0; j < jmax; j++) if(i <= argv[1][j]) fputc(i,datptr); else { fputc(argv[1][j],datptr); z++; /* Count the chars that reached the end */ } fputc(13,datptr); /* Get back to the start of the line */ } fprintf(datptr,"\n"); fclose(datptr); } --------8<----8<----8<-------------------->8---->8---->8----------- Dirk Muders Max-Planck-Institut fuer Radioastronomie Auf dem Huegel 69 D-53121 Bonn p63...@MPIfR-Bonn.MPG.de ....................................................................... -- __ ___ ___ :::/ |_ | . ):: ::( (-| | | <::: :::\__|___|_|_\::
