Oh come on now Martin. If, as you claim, you have been a few years
reading Usenet newsgroups you must know how...to some readers...the
slightest little thing can be misinterpreted and seen as an insult
when nothing was further from the "offending" poster's mind.
Even a Smiley :-) can be insulting.


Once you start to diddle other peoples' pictures, and use their
characters, you immediately create the risk that someone (even if it
is not the original author) will take offence.

So who can define, unarguably, what is offensive and what is not?
Tolerance of offensiveness is a very variable quantity.


As I've said earlier, on the subject of diddling, early-days
diddling was usually regarded as minor changes to a simple drawing
to help a newcomer to Ascii Art to gain confidence in making their
own totally original pictures.

Nowadays diddling has tended to become a way of passing comment
(pictorially) on some picture someone else has posted to make
a point or express an opinion.


So if you are going to post your pictures publicly in unmoderated
newsgroups you have to be prepared for them to be used in all sorts
of ways that you do not like.

If you do not want things to happen to your pictures then you should
try to confine them to a Private Website where you can impose
control of their use or just don't post them publicly at
all...especially ones you are extra-sensitive about.


Example:

This very next posting of yours _COULD_ offend Veronica ( not that I
think it will ) but it demonstrates how subjective "offensiveness"
can really be on the Net...and it is not confined to pictures but
applies to text messages too.
