formatting advice needed

Hi ASCII Artists

I am new to this game and I have been trying to create an interesting
signature file for myself. My problem is that the files I create with
Win95 Notepad don't seen to have a stable format. I worked away for ages
creating an interesting piece and after transmitting it to myself as a test
the formatting had changed adding lines and throwing everything out.

Can anyone give me some basic rules to follow that will keep my format
stable? I suspect I have to adhere to a minimum line length or something.

Thank you in advance

Hans
