TALK: UNIX people

     No...  this is due to a decade of calling around with my VT100 only to
be told that it was completely irrelevent that I existed because my
computer was not IBM compatible, didn't use "messy DOS" for an OS (a CP/M
stillborn OS that evolved into a UNIX "also ran"), and used ISO graphics
instead of conforming to Micro-Soft's idea of IBM GRAFTABL ANSI.SYS
graphics.  I fled to UNIX because UNIX's TERMCAP database allowed me to use
any terminal and machine I happened to have at the time, which is why I am
posting in a USENET NewsGroup called "ASCII-ART" rather than
"ANSI.SYS-ART".
     "Lack of knowledge..." ?  When I asked IBM PC people to please try and
support ISO graphics for my equipment I got a response of "Huh?" or I was
laughed at!
     "Intolerance..." ?  When I explained that I was having trouble reading
IBM PC MS-DOS ANSI.SYS formatted screens I was told that I... "must
immediately go out and buy an IBM PC, and --THAT-- would solve all of my
graphics problems."
     "Sheer arrogance..." ?  I was told that because I was not an IBM PC
owner, anything that I had to say was therefore irrelevent.

     I have heard of BBSes.  One particular BBS called "PC-BOARD" started
out its early history insisting that callers use IBM PCs and took about
five years to recognize that there were other types of computers out there.
There is a BBS called "FirstClass" that insists that all of its callers are
Macintoshes running graphical clients.
 
     While UNIX has had a twenty-year history of accomodating all kinds of
different computer hardware -- except for TBBS -- IBM PC and MAC BBSes have
done virtually nothing to accomodate brands of computer that were not their
own, demanding that all machines conform to their inferior "standards".  (A
case in point being that the MS-DOS has just discovered "disk packing"
while other computer companies have been packing hard drive data in
RADIX-50 format since some time around the middle 1970's.)
 
     "Lack of understanding..." ?  Don't talk to me about lack of
understanding....  "I have this pain in all the diodes running down my left
side...."  ;-)
