The way my norwegian friend explained it was they have their xmas dinner 
and presents on the 24th, but he didnt know why. I thought it was a 
scandinavian thing, but I guess not :)

Here in the UK it sort of depends. Some families open *one* present on 24th 
and the rest on the 25th, which is also when the dinner happens. We usually 
open all the presents in the morning of the 25th, then have dinner, then 
generally either fall asleep, watch tv, or try and play a game of some sort 
(which traditionally ends in an argument and various family members not 
talking to each other for the rest of the day ;-)..)

When we were kids present opening was spread across the day. Nowadays we 
just dont bother and do it all at once. Oh, there's the stocking too which 
"santa" fills with small presents while you're asleep, so that's usually 
first. My mum goes a bit mad with that, to the extent that when last year I 
was in the US for xmas she actually put the stocking in my suitcase so I'd 
still have it :)
