I know what to do in Outlook EXPRESS.

Tools -> Options... -> Read -> Fonts...

Then insert a fixed width font of your choice from the "Proportional
Font" pulldown.  It'll also display HTML e-mails and posts in that
font from then on.  It's easy to get used to, though.

Why OE doesn't work like IE--proportional fonts for "text/html" and
fixed width fonts for "text/plain"--is one big mystery to me!
