The last moderator was Don Bertino and the deputy was Allen Mullen. Allen Mullen said that he would not take on the job of moderator but would serve only as a deputy. It would seem that both moderators vacated the position at the end of 1996 without finding a successor. Moderation is a thankless task although moderators are the people hold and wield the most power on the Net. From where I sit the spam in alt.ascii-art is very low and the signal-to-noise ratio is high. The alt.ascii-art.animation group is all spam but really only amounts to a handful of postings per week. It is the absence of animations that makes the group seem all spam. As you are well aware my personal view is that ascii-art should not be moderated because it defeats the freedom and independence of spirit that all artists desire. I strongly opposed the creation of rec.arts.ascii (moderated) and the clear intentions of some participants to destroy the unmoderated newsgroup "alt.ascii-art". My views and position are unchanged. No surprise perhaps ? :-) Way back in May 1993 the moderated newsgroup "rec.arts.ascii" passed 453:74 at the vote. Where are those 453 YES voters now ? Most never contributed anything to rec.arts.ascii although a YES vote is meant to signify a person's interest in reading and contributing to the group they are voting to create. Remember Jorn ? You and I were adversaries in the battle to create rec.arts.ascii (moderated) to the detriment of alt.ascii-art. Some people were in favour of rmgrouping (removing) "alt.ascii-art" but the 74 NO voters deterred them. They wanted to remove the alt.* newsgroup to eliminate any competition to rec.arts.ascii (moderated). Are you ready to do battle once again Jorn ? I'm eagerly waiting. :-) . /:\ |:| |:| |:| *_ _ _ _ _ _ _ * |:| __ | `_' `-' `_' `-' `_' `-' `_'| ,_|:|_, / ) | | (Oo / _I_ | LONG LIVE alt.ascii-art | +\ \ || __| ^ | | ^ \ \||___| | | Free & Unmoderated | | \ /.:.\-\ | (*) |_ _ _ _ _ _ _ | \^/ | |.:. /-----\ | _<">_ | `_' `-' `_' `-' `_' `-' `_'| _(#)_ | |___| oOo | o+o \a/ \0 0/ \a/ (=) / |<a.a-a>| 0'\a-a/\/ \/\a-a/`0 |_____\ : / /_^_\ | | /_^_\ | | \ \:/ || || | | || || | | | | d|_|b_T____________________________T_d|_|b \ / | \___ / / / | \_____\ / / `-' / / -cfbd- ____________________________ / /___________ Bye, >
