You can't be serious?! If anyone tried using edlin for ascii
art they'd soon need to go and lie in a darkened room for an
hour! In fact I don't think it's even supplied on standard
Microsoft distribution media any more (although it is still
available on a supplementary "diehard disk" for people who
have trouble keeping up :-).

Borland Brief is a good screen editor for DOS, far better than
Microsoft's Edit junk. Unfortunately I don't think Brief is
supported any more. The only problem I have with Brief (using
v3) is the typamatic (repeat) functionality. This is apparently
not real-time based but just a crude processor loop; so whereas
it works fine on a 20 MHz 386, holding a key down for a fraction
too long on say a 250 MHz Pentium II adds, or worse still wipes,
about a megabyte of text. If anyone knows of a patch for this,
or a version that doesn't suffer from it, I'd be eternally,
leg-hugglingly grateful.

Perhaps the best solution is a product called Slick Edit, because
you can configure it to mimic almost any screen editor, including
Brief, Code View (I think?), Emacs, vi, etc. It works on DOS, OS/2,
and Windows.

Don't get me started on vi! Just thinking about the detestable
pile of poo makes my blood pressure rise, and I have to use the
wretched thing at work. emacs is far better, infinitely superior.

For vi bigots^H^H^H^H^H^H enthusiasts, and a few do exist, there
is a graphical (multi-colour, multi-window) version called "vim".
But this is a classic case of trying to make a silk purse out of
a sow's ear.

Nice. It vaguely reminds me of the floating critter in
Commander Keen (one of the first PC games by ID Software).
