The best in the art world by African-American Artists from across the
United States and specially invited artists from Africa, Trinidad and
London. Artists will show their recent work in the three-day long October
Gallery Philadelphia Art Expo, Friday and Saturday 10am to 10pm, and
Sunday 10am to 7pm, in a 15,000 sq. ft. show space at the Philadelphia
Marriott Hotel Exhibition Center (1201 Market Street). Expo admission is FREE.
Childcare is FREE.
Count on Art Expo tradition, quality, variety, and entertainment for
an exciting weekend for inspiring visual perceptions and art education
workshops to further the growth of art understanding.
Angela Stribbling of BET television and news anchor reporter Joyce
Evans of Fox 29 will be on hand to greet guests at the Expo.
Meet the artists in person. Popular artists Annie Lee of Chicago and
Charles Bibbs of Los Angeles are well known nationally for their
renderings of comedic everyday subjects and characters (Lee) and subjects
manifesting stability, power and family (Bibbs). Gilbert Young of
Atlanta will be there. He created the "He Ain't Heavy" image identified
with the universal theme 'each one help one'. Of nearly 100 visual
artists represented in the Expo, about 50 will meet, autograph and give
art talks about their work.
Featured well-known painters not there will be Romare Bearden, Jacob
Lawrence, Jonathan Green, Bernard Hoyes, Samuel Benson, John Biggers, and
William Tolliver.
Entertainment, poetry, seminars, storytelling, African drumming, art
workshops, and readings by authors of newly published books will enhance
the Expo experience.
Each year, a charitable organization benefits from the October Gallery
Philadelphia Art Expo. For the fifth consecutive year, the Philadelphia
Scholar's Fund is a selected receiver of the annual charitable gift.
The Scholar's Fund provides the last dollar monies to high school seniors
bridging the gap between awarded financial aid and unanticipated costs
necessary to attend college, such as travel expenses, books, etc. The
Burned Black Churches and the 700 Network will also receive gifts.
AN AMERICAN PHENOMENON -- AFRICAN-AMERICAN ART
"My pictures express my life and experience.
I paint the things I know about and the things
I have experienced. The things I have experienced
extend into my national, racial, and class group.
So I paint the American scene."
Jacob Lawrence
America's premiere living African-American Artist
