But as continuous forms are still in use - so are those *old* tractor feed printers . Reminds me of the letter to the Mensa bulletin way back when (1974) when there was discussion over USA changing to decimal (metric) measure in lieu of english measure suggesting that we change instead to hexadecimal because ALL computers run on hex . (U.S. military had already converted to metric for NATO) At that time VIRTUALLY all mainframes, the few that were around, had 4 bit processors and ran on octal - not hex ? NOPE - two types of computers - slow subject to error analog AND -------- digital (binary) - therefore ------- virtually ALL computers run on BINARY only . We humans merely use HEX(8 bit) or OCTAL because they conform to powers of 2 (binary) easy for computers whereas decimal conforms to powers of ten - easy for us humans . Therefore, a very popular DIP (Dual Inline Package) was a BCD converter that input Binary Code and output Decimal . Calculators today are complete on one tiny chip . The first scientific calculator I had contained 14 DIPS including the BCD converter for it's fluorescent display . My first computer was 32 bit long ago before others upgraded now 128 bit computers are around - I vote we stick with HEX (8 bit) for computer languages even though virtually all PC's have been 32 bit for a long time now .
