  According to the world book dictionary:

iconoclast 1. a person who attacks cherised beliefs or institutions which
he/she thinks are wrong or foolish. 2 a person opposed to worshipping
images or who breaks or destroys them. 

The encyclopedia part of my world book says:

iconoclast, has come to mean a person who attacks long-established beliefs. 

Though those in the Byzantine sect you wrote of described themselves as
iconoclasts, the word has, over time, come to mean an idealist and a
rebel. Someone who opposes beliefs he/she thinks are wrong no matter what
the personnal cost. Examples: Bronte's Jane Eyre, Joan of Arc, Bill
clinton (ok, maybe not bill...) Anyway, this kind of
stand-up-in-what-you-beleive-in attitude was what I meant my board to
represent. I'm sorry if you disagree.

p.s. That byzantine sect wasn't heretic; they completely supported the
church. They opposed the worship and veneration of pictures though. This
is why they wanted them destroyed: they thought they took away from the
purity of the church. Calling them egotisical is not all that truthful.
