this must be the easiest solution using modern hardware ... assuming
the overprint lines can be separated from the original and padded out
where necessary ... also if the chars in the 1st layer are identical
to the overprint layer the overprint layer could be shifted
by 1 pixel for the emphasis

i have seen a recent example using this technique and it works fine
