Technically you just might be correct, but generally speaking you are wrong!
Snag the dictionary off your shelf and look up the definition of HELIX you will
find something similar to the following:

"Any spiral, either lying in a single plane or moving around a cylinder, cone
etc." 

Note it says *any* spiral not just a spiral with corners that are rounded a bit
more. 

Many other definitions that you will find will state something similar, some
even define Helix as an "ornamental spiral" giving no say to its scientific
meaning. The consensus is that a Helix is a "spiral form". As always, it is
wise to have more than one source for any given fact.

I feel (not just an opinion but backed by numerous definitions) that the term
can be used a bit more loosely than in the strict technical manner you refer
to. If you don't believe it have a look at a few definitons (not just one). 

I will agree with you in the fact that I did use the word loosely (but still
correctly) and not in its strictest sense.

Don't mean to be argumentive, just could'nt resist correcting someone who felt
(incorrectly) they were being corrective ;)
